Wish Granter

Wish Granter

A Story by ♋ Iris ♋
"

A wish. A wish carrier who turns into a wish granter.

"
I love flying around and being free. I live close to the tribe of Native Americans. They look up at me in wonder. The attention is nice sometimes. They say I am the beautiful messenger who can send their wishes and dreams to the Great Spirits and I can.
One day, when I was flying around, little hands wrapped around my small, fragile body. I was scared at first. I tried to escape, but soon a small voice whispered something to me. It was a girls voice. I feel compelled to listen to this innocent voice.
The girl is explaining something to me and I listen. "I'm sorry to bother you." The young voice said apologetically. "I just really what the Great Spirits to hear my plea." I listen and can hear the sadness in her voice. I laid down in the palm of her hand and listened to the young Native American girl.
"I want to ask if you could tell the Great Spirits to send for my brother. Mother and father had both passed on from the pale-face's illness. Brother is off fighting the opposing tribe and I just want him home. Anything that you can do will be greatly appreciated my friend." I felt sorry for the girl. I also felt a sort of attachment toward her. Like I needed to do this for her. Like I Had to. I wanted to help her.
I opened my wings when she opened up her hands to let me go. I took to the sky. I didn't want to waste any time. This girl needed someone in her life. If I could give this message to the Great Spirits, they could do something to get the brother of this girl home safely.
It took a while but finally I made it up to wear the Great Spirits resided. The Great Bear was the one I went to. She was the one who I knew could help me. She was a big spirit. She looked like she was in a good mood so I went straight up to her and asked her straight out.
"Great Spirit Alo, I have a wish from a young Native American girl." And I told her what the child had told me. She looked interested. Every word I said made sense as to why we should help out this request.
"You have traveled far, young girl. You also seem attached to this mission. I would like you to travel and find this boy and reunite the two siblings." The Great Bear's voice was kind and sweet. "I will give you the form of any thing you want to be. I thought about this for a moment and I made a decision.
"I wouldn't want to overwhelm the boy. Could you, Great Spirit, turn me into a human for the needed time? I have been around humans and know their ways." It sounded to me like I was almost pleading for the chance to help the girl that I had become attached to.
"That can be arranged." The Great Bear smiled as she gave her a berry. "This will turn you to a human as long as fate decides. I took the berry graciously and slowly ate it.
There was a flash of light and I quickly traded my wings for two legs, arms, and long, flowing black hair. I also had on a traditional tribal dress made from the finest dear skin and the most expensive looking beads. My eyes shown a florescent blue as did my original wings show in the sun.
"Thank you Great Spirit." I said.
"Now help out that child in any way possible." She instructed. I nodded as she started lowering me back down toward the earth. "I will take you as close as the battlefield that I can get."
"Thanks again." She started going home. I looked down at the earth that I was flying over. It was a woodsy area. Not too far up ahead, there was a clearing that I could two tribes going at it.
"The boy you seek is the one with a scar over his left eye." I heard in my head. I nodded as I was set down at the edge of the clearing. There were arrows flying and warriors yelling as they rushed into battle. There was also lifeless bodies on the ground with arrows sticking out of them.
There wasn't anything I could do at the moment. Girls weren't meant to fight right? Thats right, but... I sighed and ripped a piece of clothing of my sleeve  and braided my hair back behind me so it wouldn't be in my face. I might not be able to fight, but I can help save lives.
I ran out onto the battlefield. There were arrows flying everywhere and there was no sign of stopping. A few people with spears were coming toward me. I quickly evaded them and kept running. I came across the first man that needed help. He had an arrow in his knee and shoulder.
"I am here to help you." The man looked surprised. He had on some dear skin cloth so I took some of that and tied it above his knee. Then quickly pulled the arrow out. This guy was from the tribe that I lived next to so I knew he would be poisoned. The opposing side uses poison on their arrows.
"Do you have a knife?" I asked him. He reached in the pouch and pulled out a short dagger. "This might hurt a bit as well." I sliced the wound site and quickly put my mouth over wear the blood started to ooze. I sucked the blood into my mouth and spit it out. I did this several times to get the poison out of the blood stream. I did the same with the man's shoulder.
~Later on~
I saved about twenty different people on both sides of the battle. I had gotten help from one of the guys I had saved. He was shot in the shoulder and was able to help me save more lives than I would have. Finally the fighting had stopped and that allowed me and him to help more people.
"I never got your name." The boy said to me.
"Just call me Aponi." I said. That was the name I gave myself when I first hatched.
'I see. I am Odakota. What is a women doing here?" He asked.
"I was looking for someone. He would be on your side of the tribal war. Do you know of a guy here with a scar over his left eye?" Odakota thought for a second. Then he looked at me again.
"There is only one person who had a scar over his eye before he joined the troops to fight."
"Who?"
"Anaba." I tilted my head. "I can take you to him if you want to."
"That would be great, Odakota. Thank you." I was finished with people on the battlefield. I was thanked the entire way back by both sides. I just replied with, "Don't thank me, if there wasn't war to begin with, I wouldn't have to save people in the first place."
"Aponi, come on!" Odakota yelled at me.
"On my way." I caught up to him and looked where he was looking. There were a few people sitting around a fire. One person stood out. I could tell that this boy was Anaba as soon as he looked back at me. He stood up instantly.
"Whoa, looks like he likes you." Odakota snorted. Anaba walked right up to me.
"Anaba,I have come to take you back. Your sister needs you." Anaba was only about seventeen or eighteen like me. He was built closer to scrawny but he had some muscle. He tilted his head.
"I know. I also know that your name is Aponi." This one surprised me. "I had a vision right before the fight. I know that I need to go back with Kineks."
"I can take you guys home now." I nodded to Alo. Odakota shouted suddenly.
"Take me too! I need to see if my mom is still ok." I asked Alo in my head. She sighed but agreed to bring him along. Alo told us to get to a secluded place and she started flying us back to the tribe.
"So you know everything about me?" I asked Anaba. He shook his head.
"No, I was told that you would come for me. I only know your name." Anaba answered. I nodded as we started lowering toward the ground. "I also got a vision of your face. I was kind of shocked by uh... how uh... you are beautiful." I blinked several times.
"Uh, thank you." I said blushing a bit. This wasn't the first time someone called me that. My nickname was the 'Beautiful Messenger', but why was I reacting like this. I should be use to this.
"It's true. So be confident." Odakota butted in.
"Thank you." I said again smiling. I looked back over at Anaba. He was smiling at me without looking away at all. I felt my face flush for the first time. I felt my heart begin to be beat faster. I looked away so not to make it obvious.
"Don't fight the feelings, Aponi." I heard Alo's voice in my head. I didn't want to feel these feelings. Anaba was a human, I am a butterfly. There is no way we could share these feelings. Suddenly I felt something in my hand. I looked down and saw it was Anaba's hand. My eyes widened. It was a weird feeling but it was a good feeling.
"I feel like we were meant to meet." He said shyly. I knew that we were meant to meet. It was my job to come and get him, but he means something else by this. We were still flying through the air thanks to Alo. There was a forest right below us.
"I know that we were because I was sent here, for one." I said.
"You were sent here to get the both of us, right?" Odakota asked. The look on his face was hopeful. I couldn't really tell him the truth.
"Yes, I was. But it was for a reason." I said getting a bit worried. I didn't know what they would think.
"What is Aponi?" Anaba's voice was calm yet full of wonder.
"Don't say anything yet." Alo's voice came. "Let this one play out." I sighed. It would be wrong of me to go against the Great Spirit that has helped me so far.
"Nothing never mind."
"Look, there's the village!" Odakota yelled. We landed in the woodsy area around the  tribe.
"Come on, let's go. Lets go see my sister." Anaba said. I nodded as we started to run toward the tent that the two would now live in. We had gotten some looks since the others knew that Anaba and Odakota should be at war against the opposing tribe.
"Anaba!" Kineks ran over to her brother and hugged him tightly. "I missed you. I missed you so much Anaba." She said gripping tighter onto him. Anaba smiled and wrapped his arms around her as well.
"I missed you too Kineks." They reunited for a while and then Kineks looked over at me standing in the door way of the tent. She walked over to me. Before I could even introduce myself, she looked deep into my eyes.
"Thank you for granting my wish and bringing my brother back." She said. I blinked several times. "I can tell by your eyes. They were the same exact shade as the butterfly I wished on." She hugged me quickly. "Thank you so much." I got eye level with her and hugged her back.
I finally reunited these two. My work was done right? I should have gone back to the woods, right? I wasn't changing back into a butterfly. "You really are a butterfly, aren't you?" I looked over at Anaba. I nodded while standing fully up.
"Thats right. Kineks made a wish to me. I went and visited the Great Spirits and Alo changed me till my job was done. The problem is I reunited you guys but I am not changing back." I said, puzzled.
"Maybe your not meant to leave us?" Odakota said after seeing his mother. He was standing in the doorway.
"He's right." I look down at Kineks. "What if you are meant to stay here with us?" She said looking back at Anaba.
"Aponi, we all would love it if you stayed here." Anaba said as he walked over to me. He slowly took a hold of my hand and pulled me closer to him and kissed me on the lips. My heart raced and my face flushed again.
"This is where you are meant to be." Alo's voice said in my head. I smiled as we broke apart. Before I could say anything, we all hear voices of people outside the tent. We all rushed outside.
"What the..?" All the people from the battle field, both this tribe's and the other tribe's soldiers were here. They were not fighting but just talking like normal.
"Hey there she is!" Someone yelled. I noticed they were talking about me. The two tribe chiefs started toward me.
"This is the girl who helped both soldier. Not caring which side they fought for." One of the chiefs said.
"When the men tried to thank her she just answered them by saying if we were not fighting she wouldn't have to help out at all." The other chief said. "She shown that we were foolish for fighting over land and have both of us die out, when we could live together and help each other out."
"We decided that she was right and we are ending this war. Our tribes will become allies rather than rivals." Everyone cheered. "In this event, we will have a great feast tonight." I was overwhelmed. The whole village was happy and excited. Everything was going good and I had a feeling that Alo was right. I was meant to be here.
"Stay with us!" Kineks said happily.
"Can you really say no to that face?" Odakota laughed. Anaba tilted his head and smiled. I finally understand what Alo meant by 'as long as fate decides'. It was fate that I would fall for Anaba, that I would make friends with Odakota, and that I would care for Kineks so much. This all was meant to happen.
And I am really happy that this all happened to a lonely, but beautiful wish granter.

I did some research, Check it out:
There is a Native American legend that says, " If you have a secret wish, capture a butterfly and whisper your wish to it. Since butterflies cannot speak, your secret is ever safe in their keeping. Release the butterfly, and it will carry your wish to the Great Spirit, who alone knows the thoughts of butterflies. By setting the butterfly free, you are helping to restore the balance of nature, and your wish will surely be granted."
Alo = Spiritual Guide
Aponi = Butterfly
Odakota = Friend
Anaba = Returns From War
Kineks = Rosebud
