Kyo and KitoA Story by ♋ Iris ♋The twins of the people that live in my head. Kyo leaned his head back in his chair. This room was always
cold so he got used to wearing sweatshirts even though it was summer. The room
was painfully white and almost blinding. This happened every time he came here.
He closes his eyes and slowly drifted off to sleep in his chair. Most little
boys at the age nine would dream of something along the lines of super heroes
and being a firefighter. Kyo was different. He dreamed of a world free of wars.
He dreamed that there was no more need to fight anyone. He dreamed that
everyone would love each other and have a perfect world. But the
thing that Kyo dreamed for most of all was… A loud
siren went off and woke him up with a jolt. Ok there were several things that
were not the same as they were when he fell asleep. 1) He had a blanket over
himself. 2) Kito wasn’t in his bed anymore. 3) Kito was standing in front of
him. “What are
you doing out of bed?” Kyo got up, setting his blanket down, and started to
push his brother back into bed. Kyo stopped as Kito reached down and grabbed
his wrist. He winced noticeably so that his twin brother checked it out. “Did you
get in a fight again, Kyo?” Just as he asked that, a nurse came rushing into
the room. “Kito what
are you doing out of bed?” This nurse was the nice one that would listen to the
boys with no matter what they had to say no matter how busy she was. Her name
was Blaze, which matched her fire orange hair. “You had just had your
chemotherapy a week ago.” And that statement right there leads us back to what Kyo
dreams most about. Every time Kyo dreams, it is of a
world without cancer. Blaze helps
Kito back into bed and hooks him back up to the monitors. Blaze calls down and
tells them it was a false alarm. She gave them a warning and headed back out. “Kyo, you
got in a fight.” Kito reached on the other side of the bed and pulled out a
first-aid kit. “Its not
that bad.” Kyo said plopping down in his chair. He hated the fact that Kito
always had to patch him up. His brother was in worse shape than he was and he
had to get taken care of by him. Kito gave him the puppy dog eye and that
instantly made Kyo walk over. “You know I
like doing this.” He said smiling slightly. “If I could grow up, I would love
to be a doctor.” Kyo’s heart felt like it tore in half. He got angry instead of
showing tears. “What do
you mean ‘if’? You are going to grow up and be the best doctor ever!” Kyo never
understood why he would want to stay in this place with the icky smells and the
screaming of patients in agony. “Kyo,” Kito
looks at his brother sadly as he sprays antiseptic on his knuckles. This makes
him flinch lightly. “You know as well as I do that the chemo isn’t working the
way it should.” Kyo took his hand back and turned away. He didn’t want to
believe it but it was true all the same. Kito was going through the pain of
chemotherapy for nothing. He was only getting worse. “Lets go
see grandma.” Kyo says still not facing his brother. Kito smiled slightly and
pressed the call button for the nurse. Blaze came in several seconds later. “Something
up boys?” She asked as she walked into the room. Kyo always respected this
woman. She did everything in her power to make Kito feel better in this place.
She was the highlight of Kito’s day when Kyo couldn’t make it to the hospital
to see him. “We want to
see our grandmother.” Kyo answers her. She smiles slightly down at the nine
year old. “I bet she
will want to see you guys as well. Stay put and I will be back with a wheel
chair.” She winked at both of them. Kyo sat on the edge of the bed and waited
silently. He didn’t want to look at Kito in this state so he didn’t turn around
when he felt the bed move. Kito wrapped his weak arms around his brother’s neck
and held him close to his chest. “You hear
that?” Kito asked. Kyo heard it and smiled slightly. He heard the pounding of
his brother’s heart. It was there and as long as it was, Kyo wouldn’t be sad
about his brother’s condition. Blaze came
back with a wheel chair. Kito pushed off of Kyo struggling a bit and Blaze tried
to help Kito out of bed. “Can I do it?” Kyo asked. “I have done it before.”
Blaze looked over at Kito and he nodded in approval. Kyo placed Kito’s head on
his chest, his right hand under his back, and his left arm under the back of
his knees. He then lifted him off the bed with ease and placed him gently into
the chair. “You’re
getting better at that.” Blaze said smiling sadly. Kyo shrugged it off and
wiped his nose like it was nothing. The three of them headed up the elevator
and down the hall to the cardio hallway while Kyo was pushing Kito in the
chair. “How has
grandma been doing?” Kito asked outside of the door. Blaze smiled at his
question. “She has
been doing better. If she stays on her pills then she should be even better.”
She smiled and opened the door. Their grandmother was in her bed reading a
murder mystery novel. “Hey
Grammy.” Kito said as Kyo pushed him over to her bedside. She smiled over at
the boys and put down her book. Their grandmother wasn’t that old. She had only
just turned fifty a few weeks ago, but the atmosphere in the hospital room
added at least ten years to her aging face. “Hello
there boys.” She said with her always-smiling face. Blaze stood in the corner
of the room and watched this touching moment. “How are
you doing, Grammy?” Kito asked as Kyo locked the wheels. He then sat down on
the end of the bed to talk with his only parental figure in his life. “I’m doing
a lot better now.” She says comfortingly. Kyo could almost sense that she was
lying. He didn’t believe her one bit, but he hid his feelings. “How are you two
doing?” She asked. Kyo sat quietly and let his brother go first. “I’m
feeling a bit better.” He said smiling slightly. “A bit?”
Blazed piped up from the corner. “Mrs. Jameson, he got up out of bed all by
himself today.” That statement made their grandma smile even more than she was
before. “That’s
really good to hear.” She cooed him and patted him on the head. She looked over
at Kyo. “How about you sweetie? How was school?” Kyo never liked school. That
was mostly because he got into plenty of fights there from ignorant people that
didn’t know their place. “School
wasn’t the greatest, Gran.” Is what came out. She looked down at his wrapped up
knuckles and touched his cheek with her wrinkly hands. Kyo never understood why
his brother wouldn’t tell the others that he has cancer and that is the reason
why he is bald. They would probably stop and leave him alone after that. “How are
you feeling then?” She asked feeling his face. “You do feel kind of warm.” She
said glancing over at Blaze. She got the hint and went to get a thermometer. “I’m fine,
Gran.” Kyo said. Now that his grandmother had pointed it out, he noticed that he
did feel a bit sick in the stomach. That happened whenever he ate too much,
though, and nothing ever bad comes out of that. Blaze came
back and stuck the little machine inside of his ear. Kito was watching his
brother intently as this was going on. Kyo flinched at the ‘beep’ noise that
emanated from the machine and Blaze pulled it out of his ear. She tilted her
head and shown the image to their grandmother. “Would you
like some medicine, baby?” Blaze asked. Kyo shrugged. He didn’t know why
everyone was making a big deal over his common tummy ache and fever. Blaze left
again. Kito tilted his head at Kyo and stared at him for a while. “What?” Kyo
asked. “Were you
not feeling good for a while?” He replied his answer with a question. “It started
about the beginning of school today.” He said. “Why does it matter? You two are
in worse shape than me.” Blaze handed him some children’s size pills and he
took them just get everyone off his back. For the
next few hours, the three of them talked with a bit of commentary from Blaze.
Kyo told them about what he we learning in school. Kito had some funny stories
about the other kids in the pediatric center. Their grandma told them stories of
long ago. They had a great time wasting away the hours. “My
goodness, it is already seven!” Their grandmother exclaimed. Kito smiled. “Time flies
when you’re having fun.” He said. Kyo smiled at the old quote that he lived by
when Kito was around. “That is
true.” Their grandmother said. “But right now, I must take my medication.” Kyo
and Kito knew very well that the medicine that she took made her very relaxed
and she often falls asleep in the middle of talking to them. “We will
let you sleep then, Gran.” Kyo said as he hugged her. He jumped off the bed and
landed beside the wheel chair and then pushed Kito over to hug her as well. “I love you
boys so much.” She said pulling Kyo back into the, now, three person hug. Kito
snuggled into her and Kyo closed his eyes and embraced the hug. “We love
you too.” They said in unison. Their grandma, unknowingly to the boys, nodded
over at Blaze. It was time for Blaze to hold up her end of the unknown treaty
that would change the boys’ lives forever. © 2012 ♋ Iris ♋ |
