To Veer, per se

To Veer, per se

A Poem by zzzingbird

"If you fall, rise again"
Is not great advice
for the racehorse,
who sees through the shards of his femur
that his future's coated in gelatin and glue.

Nor for the albatross
whose bloody wing pushes her into a demented spiral
cursing the sailors below
and the bolt from the blue that did the deed

If I fall
(and I know this more certainly by far
than I know which lights in the sky are aeroplanes
and which are beckoning wisps)
I will never return
I will dissolve into the soft earth
flesh cascading
into the ground like
sherbet sand or sugar
and nothing will grow there again

I am Lot's wife,
I am Sweet Eurydice
but for the fact that no lover
has ever gazed back at me

This is a well worded poem with interesting images and references. Overall the sense is one of quiet resignation, as if the speaker believes the odds are not good. Of course, the key is not to look back. Mrs. Lot forgot that.
