Forever, Always, and Now Never

Forever, Always, and Now Never

A Poem by E.M. Lev

Ember colored water
            burning holes into the river
                        with his radioactive blood.

Split open like a leper
            sinking slowly, sinking ever
                        watching from above, as he
                                    falls so deep into himself.

Smiling heavens, crazed on enter
            mournful trance, peasant stance,
                        bred to do better.
Enter now; the night is coming to an end.

O' the ember mottled water
flooding o'er, flooding yonder
covering nose, mouth, and heart. Praying
her smile will shed its light again.

Suffer now, suffer never
redemption comes to those who run
towards the town of empty sorrow
Homes dim-lit, heats a-hollow
there, the crown jewels have all but
                        turned to dust and fallen—
Into the ember colored waters.

When he returns to her tomorrow
his soul will empty onto her:
                                    his nearly wedded bride.

The river wind, it rises up
            sending a shiver
slivering rusty electricity up and out
                                    onto the shore.

Sky a-light with willing wonder
            wanders through in near-December
                        trusting now, trusting forever, nevermore.

Hands clasped above her
            in her watered-down peaceful slumber;
                        Coughing, praying, that her mate
                                    will dare to meet her.

That which watches down from
            the heavens, laughing
                        passing down ember mottled showers

                                    to her love, so foolish.

Jumping into the abyss
            for his love, whom
                        he will no longer miss
will meet him on the other side.

Pulled away from the ember waves
            crying out they have saved
a man whose one goal has
                        been denied.

Born to wealth and power,
            but not fortunate enough
                        to love her when
she could still feel his warmth around her.

He couldn't crack his egg of shelter
that was shattered when the glittering ember seas
                        came crashing.

Ardently, aimlessly dashing
            in lust and selfish invincibility.

                        Forever, always, and now never
                                    will they join themselves
           as one, hollow heart.

I love this poem! The first thing I noticed about it was how interesting it looked on the page; the words flow beautifully, aided by the enjambment, which really distills the emotion of the piece for me. The imagery is also fantastic; I especially liked the 'split open like a leper' similie as it was unusual yet powerful, and the crown jewels that 'have all but turned to dust and fallen - Into the ember coloured waters'' - very poignant. I can't believe you're only 17! Great stuff :)
