Love TraitorA Story by zoEstrr
"Why did you do it?" Megan asked, her brown eyes full of questions. Everything seemed fine before, they were happy. They were like a normal happy couple, going to the movies, having dinner every now and then together, sending small notes to each other. Megan did not get what was wrong with the picture. Could she have missed the signs? Maybe the other day when he let go of her arm while walking..could that have signalled a crack in the relationship. Or maybe the other minor fight they had over having sex. Megan's head felt like it was going to crack because of all the thinking.
"No, Meg, it's not that I didn't love you or it has always been about the sex. Sex is secondary but Meggie, I don't love you anymore," Nate sighed. He steadied his hands on her arms and shook her lightly, the expression Megan wore was one of shock, she could not believe the man who said he will always love her was telling her that the feeling was gone. It can not be true, she still loved Nate. "No, wait. Wait," Megan closed her eyes and envisioned the wedding scene that she had imagined countless of times, she lifted a finger, pointing at Nate, "We were supposed to stay together. I, I just know it. I can see us, twenty years from now, still beaming." Nate shook her again, " Look, Megan, just because you can picture it doesn't mean I can. I can't imagine it, okay? I can't. There has been so many cracks, so many signs. I saw it coming. You're always like that, in your own happy world, and when reality crashes in, you just run away. That's why we can't stay together anymore, Meg! I'm tired of running away, of you acting like a child. I can't always protect you, Meg. S**t, I try to, but this is wearing me out. I'm sorry, Megan. I need to go." He let go of her, running his hand through his hair. Nate slipped past her, walking fast and quickly turned the corner. He had disappeared for good. Megan just stood there, rooted to the spot. What Nate had said, it was like a knife, cutting through her, stabbing her. It hurt, not what he had said, but the tone he had used. It seemed like he was so nonchalant about it, like they were discussing about the weather. It was all Nate's views and it was all what he thought. He did not wait for her to speak, he just left her hanging. Megan felt her knees buckle. She had no more strength. Empty tears rushed out of her; she realised, at the very moment she fell, Nate would not be the one to pick her up anymore. Nate was gone. At the corner of the road, Nate saw her fall. He saw the woman he loved so dearly cry her heart out. Nate broke down. "You did what you had to do," Jackson slipped in a twenty dollar bill into Nate's coat pocket. "S**t you, Jackson. You have no heart," Nate cursed. "I never said I did," and the man walked off, leaving Nate to bear the brunt of his stupidity. Deep in his heart, Nate knew that listening to Jackson was the most ridiculous thing he did. Letting go of someone he truly loved, Nate will never forgive himself. Jackson walked towards Megan. She was still crumpled over, the tears staining her beautiful face. "Hey there, Meggie." At the sound of her name, Megan opened her eyes. Fresh tears started rolling down her cheeks again, " He left me." Jackson drew her into an embrace. From far, he could see Nate staring at them, his fury radiating from where he stood. Jackson smiled, ruining Nate's life was one thing, ruining Megan's life would be another. Nate had thought that Jackson will protect her, instead, he had sent the damsel right in front of the dragon's cave. Jackson murmured happily as Megan sobbed into his shoulder, "I promise you, Meggie, everything will be just fine."
