An Echo

An Echo

A Poem by Dani

Confusion encases my being.
Names swirl through my subconscious,
Thoughts billowing out in all directions.

Ideas thrown around like a rag doll misplaced,
Lost, confused, and misunderstanding,
She, as well as I, turn to the empty black in our minds.

Left alone with our thoughts,
we are abandoned, and sentenced
to facing those which exiled us.

It began.
A silent plea for help turned vocal.
My cry became one of joy as I was found.
His clear gold voice calling out to me admist the darkness.
It embraces me, whirling around in a stream of metallic hues.

His voice lights the way,
Pulling me free from my grim reverie.
As he approaches my hiding place, he glows.
His quiet joy illuminates my gaunt face,
His grin infectious even in the dark.

Unknowingly, he has lead me out of the forest.
Me, a simple rag doll.
One that has been used by many,
And then discarded without a second thought.

All of this, brought upon by the simple utterance of a few syllables.
I have cast myself into oblivion,
permanently damaging myself.
I fight with my choices,
Although it was never my choice to make.

There is one,
Glorious to the eyes.
In its shadows, another is waiting.
A quieter, brighter prize.

He denies my return,
Insisting to himself, that I don’t understand,
That I can’t understand.

Oh, how wrong the simple boy is,
Intricate without meaning.

Cast into still,
I join him, leaving the darkness,
Hitting the water with a splash,
Desperate for his clear voice in the time I have,
Before the darkness claims me as its toy once more.
