how do you become friends with your exes anyway

I think being friends with your ex is weird

but not because you still love them,

not because you're still hurting,

it's just

really

weird

 

Because how else are you supposed to talk

when you've known each other too deeply

too intimately, under the darkness of the night,

playing games only the two of you understand

dreaming of tomorrows together,

for each other,

for yourselves

 

And realizing,

after the breakup, after the closure

that you didn't really know them

the same way you knew what made them tick;

You knew their dreams, their plans, their secrets

but not their present,

not the things you would have known

had you been friends and only friends

 

And you don't know what to talk to them about,

don't know how much of you

you're still allowed to share,

how much of them

you're still allowed to see

 

Because when you're

no longer each other's

default persons,

no longer each other's

biggest ally

strongest weakness

deepest strength

 

No longer each other's
