and back by popular demand,
a man of uncertain origin, a
renowned clown and interpreter of Gogol.

A nose is a nose, as everyone knows,
and as a rose, smells regardless of the nomenklatura.
But this nose was not just any schnozz but rather
the most prominent feature of the Moscow Chief of Police.

Flung to the floor in a drunken sneeze,
Commander Nose seized both opportunity and raincoat
and stepped into the middle of the dark and stormy.

He left behind a man once renowned for his cunning.

In A History of Russian Literature, the critic D.S. Mirsky writes: "The Nose is a piece of sheer play, almost sheer nonsense. In it more than anywhere else Gogol displays his extraordinary magic power of making great comic art out of nothing."
