memento moriA Story by Zatoichiphuhk phakksI was advised today to give up memoir and try to write "stories". This from someone whom I admire and maybe agree with.
I'm not attempting an autobio; I loosely define memoirs and there is ample room for invention. Leave the definitive bio to historians and rumormongers, the only two parties interested anyway. A memoir is a foggy memory, unintelligible French overheard in a smoky Parisian dump cause you saw that movie one day.
Hopes become accomplishments, dreams are fulfilled ironically, or unfulfilled tragically; all in the service of a good tale. A memoir is inspired by a life, not a transcription of one.
As my memory deteriorates with each day, fiction will undoubtedly play an important part in my tale. Every fiction has a foundation built on the personality of the author and, however fantastic, can be mined for biographical details.
A story well-told is a fortress, a stronghold from which the author can continue to engage the culture at large. Imagination is the spackle that is poured into the holes in my damaged brain, the adhesive that keeps my personal myth from falling apart.
