No Away to Run to.

No Away to Run to.

A Poem by Alex Davis

No away to run to.

A man called barbaric, we find,

Pelt draped about him,

Standing spear in hand, Rome’s might before him,

His land, love, and children behind,

No away to run to.

A man in bars we see,

Fists clenched on iron,

‘Cause his actions caused siren,

His mind at home, where son’s empty stomach be,

No away to run to.

A woman, eyes wide, frantic,

Through the woods does fly,

Her pursuer close by,

Fate laughs, she trips in her panic,

No away to run to.

A Soldier stands tall,

Small fingers clasped about his,

What a crime this world is,

Will hesee him next fall?

No away to run to.

Young lovers do run,

The world closes ‘round them,

Their folly they can’t fathom,

So they run into the sun,

No away to run to.

An old man shovels earth,

No tear in his eye, though he realized his fears,

Worst is the sadness bearing no tears,

Wiping his hands, of the one he helped birth,

No away to run to.

We see a boy all alone,

A cold dark room,

Oh how the morning sun does loom,

When one’s solitude is known,

No away to run to …

No away to run to.
