Life's Road

Life's Road

A Poem by Alex Davis

Life's Road

Driving along, windows down, breeze through my hair,

Dashed white lines, faded in sun, cracked tar, beaten gray

Some merge on, some take their exit, I carry on, wanting to be there

A green sign, my destination seen, my path laid out, I speed away

All my life I trudge along, driving down the path before me,

For it’s my path you see, that’s been made clear, not all share it, on it I’m growing,

Nevertheless I watch good friends take their leave, past loves curve off unseen,

I stare and wonder as the dashes keep rolling, where am I going?

Not without rest, I pull over here and there to fill up,

Shake a few hands, get a few pats, back in my car and off I go,

Successful or so I’m told, as I glance at my passenger seat, uncovered, lit up,

Snap my eyes, cant think, got to focus, a good driver keeps his eyes on the road,

I pass others in my wake, and smirk at their folly,

The fools pulled over, looking around in awe,

What is it they see that makes them so jolly?

Would only I had payed attention at all.

The blurs go by, time does fly,

My cars get better while I grow gray,

New seats, cup holders, treasures of the eye,

I smirk as I drive, may it soon be the day,

I’ve done it! Here I arrive! Destination at last!

I get out with my cane and brush off my  car, let its new paint shine,

I smile and wave, “Look I’m here! Look at all I’ve got? Is it not vast”

The gatekeeper did smile, though it struck me a sad one, lackluster in shine,

“Good job!” he said “You must have worked hard!”

“Oh but I did” I smile with glee “All by myself no help required!”

That sad smile again as he shook his head “well so ends life, you’ve traveled your yard,

Enjoy now your time, with what you’ve earned and acquired”

All alone in a dimly lit room, cars paint faded, along with my smile,

Cold and alone I sat and I pondered,

Trying to remember mile from mile,

the cars gone cold, it’s time to rest …. Though thus far I’ve slumbered.
