Chapter 1A Chapter by Steven Norton A beach. He was standing alone on a sweeping expanse of sand sloping gently down to the sea. As he gazed out at the ocean, he saw waves breaking against the shore. Beyond that, there was nothing but water stretching to an unbroken horizon. Where am I? He thought, his mind a haze of memories and dreams. WHO am I? …Trevor… The word - a name? - floated through his mind. It seemed to fit, to make sense somehow. But little else did. Trevor shook his head in frustration. Why couldn’t he remember anymore? How had he come to this place- and why? Trevor glanced around to see the surrounding area. He was alone. It seemed odd to him. Why would such a place like this be all abandoned? He wondered. For it was quite a beautiful setting. “Never mind that,” he told himself, feeling foolish of such thoughts. “There are more important things to worry about.” He turned his eyes toward the sky, but had to quickly shade them from the burning intensity of what he decided to suddenly call the sun. “Shall I start naming things then?” he humorously said under his breath, though he didn’t know why. It felt good- to bathe himself in all the heat and sunlight. Trevor blankly stared at it for quite some time before realizing he was doing so. He looked down to try and gain back some vision from the blinding light he had so curiously fawned over. “Idiot,” he scowled to himself, feeling his anger rising. That’s when he noticed it. What is this sudden rush of energy? He wondered. He felt his hands getting hot. In fact his whole body was getting hot. He felt as though the very sun he had previously looked at was now inside of him, burning furiously within his chest. Trevor lifted his hands and could have sworn he saw heat glowing, radiating out from his palm and through his fingertips. He even smelled burning. Taking a deep breath, he lifted his hands to his face hoping something would happen. A surge of power coursed through him. This was more like it! It frightened him, but somehow he had the feeling that it was right. He turned his hands outward to a flared position, feeling the heat flow out like a river of lava. When he swung his arms, he could hear them sizzle through the air, almost trailing sparks in their wake. The sensation sent tingles through his body. He liked it. “Yes!” Trevor said with grim satisfaction. “Now we’re getting somewhere.” But was he? He let his arms fall to his side, overwhelmed by despair. Why was he here? What was he supposed to do now? Trevor began feeling anger and heat coursing through him again, this time building up with more intensity. He howled, clenching his fists and swinging his arms over his head. “Why- can’t- I- REMEMBER?” A bolt of fiery energy shot forth, erupting into the sky like a volcano. “HOLY S**T!” he loudly exclaimed as he fell backwards into the sand. Sparks showered down onto the beach, but Trevor didn’t feel their heat. Power…I have such power, he thought with wondrous excitement. The power of fire- of heat and flame. But where does it come from? What is it for? More questions " and still he had no answers. Not knowing made him shake with frustration and rage. It made him want to turn his power against the earth, the sky, the beach " the very world itself. It was tempting. Soooo tempting. To lose himself in chaos, to strike out with no thought for past, future, or anything else. Trevor took a deep breath. No. he couldn’t allow himself to give in. Somehow he knew that, just as he’d known his name. Okay, okay, he told himself. The knowing will come. At least… I hope it will. © 2009 Steven Norton |
