The first thing that you need to make sure of is that the electricity has been shut off at the circuit box to your home to prevent any electricity from going to the ceiling fan before working on it. If not, then you or anyone touching any of the wires are at risk for a shock, or even electrocution. In order to do any repairs on the fan you will be using a ladder or stool to reach it so you should have someone there to hold the fan once you remove it from the ceiling because most are heavy and cumbersome to hold, especially if you are standing on a ladder.

A common problem many find with this small appliance is that it has a wobble that needs fixing. This can happen because the electrical box to which it is secured is not strong enough to handle the stress of the motion of the fan or the screws that were holding in place have become loose. If the electrical box is the problem this can be an involved problem that can take time to fix. If you decide to replace it with a stronger box you may have to climb into the attic to do the replacement and attach all the wires correctly. If it is the screws you try to tighten them and not even remove the ceiling fan. To avoid any unnecessary work you should check the screws first.

If fixing the problem involves electrical work it is very important to know exactly what each wire does. To help, you should label each wire using some type of tape and a marker to write on the tape what the wire does. Yes, the wires are color-coded, but sometimes the color of them is not always the most reliable indicator of what they do. Normally, if the wires are green and yellow or just green this would indicate ground wires but may not always be the case. Making sure will help to ensure that everything is put together correctly and there will be no electrical outages or fire when turned back on. You should also have a voltmeter to check the wires for electricity just in case it is necessary to do this step.

When you are attaching the wires together you should make sure that you are using high quality wire nuts or wire harnesses to ensure that the connections will not come apart. If there are any wire connections that come loose, it could cause the ceiling fan to malfunction and may even present a fire hazard. If you are unsure about your electrical repair skills, you should hire a professional electrical contractor to do the job.
