The Reciter

Inspired by the extraordinary performance of a female reciter

The lady was a little shy
When I requested her to recite
But her heart wanted to try
The poem that hovered day and night

She started with low voice
Her face started to change
Signs of sorrow and rejoice
Were shown to interchange

Now,she was another person
Her voice rendered artistic narration
She performed a special session
She was transformed to an incarnation

Recitation was her passion
She recited poems for years
Once a poem created impression
She recited it with tears

A poem is the product of poet's passion
The reciter presents it to the people
Poet and reciter belongs to the same mission
The message of the poem spreads like ripple

I admire the partnership of poets and reciters for creativity
Both of them have great devotion
Together they work for the betterment of humanity
The world should acknowledge their contribution

Over the centuries the art of poetic recitation has been somewhat lost because of other forms of entertainment. In ancient Greece it was common to have gatherings within private garden courtyards where poetry was recited to the tune of harps and pipes. Your poem brings essence of this ancient tradition to light.

Thank you Aethereal for sharing the great information regarding the ancient tradition of poetic recitation in Greece and how this tradition is being lost.I thought poets representing Arab and Indian cultures would also share the practice of recitation in the court and in other premises.
Even nowadays Indian and Pakistani poem lovers gather to listen to poetic recitation.Also in Bangladesh a number of festivals on poetic recitations are held annually at national level where poets and reciters perform recitation.
I am very pleased that you brought the great point here and I hope more such information and stories will be shared here by the learned members.
