Quizzing... with a dash of feminism

Quizzing... with a dash of feminism

What I wrote for the "about us" page of The Girl Who Loves To Quiz, a blog created in collaboration with my best friend.

"

Fashion, gossip and pink - the first three words that society associate with girls. Even Google search.

Don't believe us?

Do a search with the keywords "girl quiz" or "the girl who loves to quiz" or anything similar. You'll find a bunch of links screaming:

  • Find the perfect shoes for your mood with five questions!
  • Are you a good girlfriend? Take this quiz to find out!
  • The "Am I Fat?" Quiz
  • Are you a tomboy or a girly girl? Answer these questions to figure out your personality!

Or, God forbid, this:

  • Which Twilight character are you most like?

We kid you not. Apparently, girls don't give a damn about environmental pollution and economic recession and corruption. They certainly don't care about the new President or that women are heading three multinational IT corporations. Because girls have to worry about things like whether Robert Pattinson or Josh Hutcherson is hotter and who looked more glam on the MTV awards red-carpet - Emma Watson or Kristen Stewart?!

It's like the whole world is out to portray girls as shallow creatures with just enough brain cells to distinguish between stilettos and flats, crushes and "true love", L'Oreal and Revlon.

We disagree.

We absolutely, positively detest this ultra-modern style of gender discrimination. Girls who are NOT materialistic airheads DO exist. There are girls who would prefer to know who won the Nobel rather than the Miss Universe. There are girls brimming with questions, ideas, solutions. There are girls who have opinions on almost everything under the sun.

There are girls who think.

But judging from the low turnout of girls in quizzes, debates and similar contests which test the grey cells, this species is probably inching towards extinction. Or maybe in hiding from the other species which label them mutations and freaks, which is plainly unfair.

However, we believe that "fairness means everyone gets what they need, and the only way to get what you need is to make it happen yourself." Thus, we decided to fill up the void of a distinctly feminine voice in the world of quiz-blogs by starting our very own. This blog is dedicated to the girl who shares our love for tidbits of trivia that seem to make life more interesting. To the girl who wants to break the chains of stereotyping.

To the girl who wants to be more than an unsung heroine.

Especially, to the girl who loves to quiz.

As I said in the description, this was written for a quiz-blog that my friend and I started. Personally, it's one of my favourite non-story/poem works so far, so I thought I'd put it up here on WC.

The Girl Who Loves To Quiz is live now, with two quizzes up and a lot more to come. Every month, we'll also feature a person from history who did not receive due recognition just because she was a woman.

Quizzing enthusiasts or not, please drop by at the blog and, if you like it, spread the word! http://thegirlwholovestoquiz.blogspot.in/

P.S Do tell me what you about this piece! Have I put forward my ideas effectively? Have I conveyed the emotion to the right degree? What could have been added and what not?
