I was held down and never permitted to flee
they cover my mouth so not to speak
and my eyes so not to see
the burden of this doom tree
I drank my bourbon and broke free
drowned myself in this humanity
and I spoke for the first time since purgatory
so I damned my father’s worth
I damned my countries birth
and I damned this cursed earth
when I felt like I couldn’t be silenced
by any god above
I kissed her lips and fell in love
she was my freedom muse
my muted noose
my lexicon’s abuse
and she may have let the devil loose
when she walked out that door
she took my verbal life of lore
now I’m still clinging to my last w***e
I’m still cleaning the blood off my past floor
so I shut my mouth and closed my eyes
and I realized that my freedom of speech
was just a lie.
Are you talking about experiencing the "absence" of the Muse or the running out of inspiration to write? Or are you talking about something else. It is very easy to take a piece literally and not "read between the lines." I don't want to miss the point. However, it doesn't mean that you can't enjoy poetry, the rhymes, the tone, etc if you don't really get the author's "original intention." :-)
What stands for the "burden of the doom tree."? Does "purgatory" refer to current life experience? A very profound poem, so hard to to comprehend in one reading. But it has creatively expressed an experience of being in a rut or a seeming hopelessness or disappointment.
It was like a confession, an outpouring that seek to hear what one feels deep inside maybe. At times, it is easier to understand what we truly believe or feel when we put these down in words...
Wow your history as a poet? thats kwel. I wish i had your talent but i'm still at mid level. I enjoyed reading it (I read it a couple of times) And i hope every one else does too.
I have to agree with Luthien, it is very hard to completely understand the poem in one reading, even in two.
But there certainly is something with this poem ... it is dark and somewhat macabre, and when you think you reached the point of no return then there is this Muse.
however, it doesn't seem to be such a good thing as you think at first ... it seems as if she brought enlightment first, but made you crash down afterwards ...
Anyway ... i think this is a very meaningfull and honest poem ... to say it with words used before ... profound ...
