American Prometheus

American Prometheus

A Poem by Z.Silas

American Prometheus

Benjamin you reached out to the heavens with a bronze key
and took from the gods... everything
you dance through our modern souls
you lit up our faces and freed us from the darkness of cole
and you gave meaning to the true worth of gold
we could only harness your dreams
extend our arms and cradle the earth
ancient fire no longer holds any worth
our future is carved in lightening
bringing to life twisted steel and plastic
pulses of the lord's beats ominous and fantastic
we first filled glass with tears from the screaming sky
then we built towers erect in defiance of god
smile for the camera and swim through the static
only the first thoughts of madness
we ripped ourselves from gravity's firm hold
and blew out the candles with atomic breath
Benjamin you set us free and damned us at the same time
the gods wipe away their tears and cheer at our demise
American Prometheus you plucked the fire from the sky
and forced the deities to live among us
no longer do we marvel and whimper at their might
we humbled the universe on the sails of Benjamin's kite
