Canary

Canary

A Poem by Your Favorite Niche

A sweet melody falling onto deaf ears,
Dancing through the mines effortlessly,
The wire cage's door slowly creaks open as if
Escape was always undeniably possible.

I heard the whimsical truths beneath
Exasperated cries and dubious laughter.
Harmonious is the bright and cheerful aria
Against the damp cool walls that surround me.

With every note, I knew I held you from danger.
Every moment, every smile, it was my burden.
Bearing each criticism with love gleaming like the sun.
Too auspicious for your gloomy pessimistic entrapment.

A realization falling onto guarded minds.
Pleading sorrows burst from the soul mercilessly.
Desperate calls with tight-lipped answers, I know now
Reciprocity was never realistically possible.

A bitter and mournful hymn escapes me as I leave.
Pitiful songbird used and discarded by unworthy captors.
Their backs cold and unwilling to convey
The slightest appreciation for my sweet melodies.

It sounds very much as though someone was done wrong here. The canary in the mind shaft metaphor gives the impression of one who was used badly, the result being that whatever love was there died from a lack of reciprocity. On the other hand, maybe the canary stepped off the bow of a sinking ship just in time.
