Episode 43:

The day is December 31st, 2004. It's a Friday evening.

After Přemysl arrives at Theo’s place, he is let in so that the two of them can eat dinner for the celebration.

Přemysl speaks in a tone of confusion, feeling surprised that Theo waited until he would arrive to eat with him.

Přemysl

Line 1) Y-You waited for me?

Theo responds excitedly.

Theo

Line 2) Of course. It’s much more enjoyable to eat with a pal beside you.

Přemysl glances at Theo flusteredly.

Přemysl

Line 3) W-What about the rest of your family?

Theo speaks informatively.

Theo

Line 4) They went ahead and ate without you. They’re all just conversing at the table together.

Theo speaks jokingly.

Theo

Line 5) Don’t tell me you expected them to wait for you. You should’ve shown up on time for that.

Přemysl responds frantically, trying to clarify Theo’s assumptions.

Přemysl

Line 6) N-Not at all. I’m glad they ate without me. I wouldn’t have wanted to keep them waiting.

Přemysl’s eyebrows furrow in guilt.

Line 7) Přemysl’s inner thoughts: I seem like such an a*****e for showing up late*. What was I thinking?

*Refer back to episode 42, line 91.

Line 8) Přemysl’s inner thoughts: The fact that Theo waited for me is even more shocking. Who in their right mind would wait for me?

Theo drags Přemysl over to the grand dining table, where all of his relatives are talking with each other.

They stop conversing when they notice Přemysl beside Theo.

A nervous expression engulfs Přemysl’s face, feeling put on the spot with all eyes on him.

Theo speaks enthusiastically.

Theo

Line 9) Everyone! This is my friend Orlin*. He will be spending the New Year’s with us.

*Remember that "Orlin" is the pseudonym that Theo knows Přemysl by (refer back to episode 15, lines 61"71, etc).

Přemysl glances at everyone awkwardly, feeling extremely anxious.

He speaks in a shy manner.

Přemysl

Line 10) H-Hello everyone. Thank you for allowing me to spend the New Year’s with you all. I appreciate the invitation…

Theo’s family members happily smile at Přemysl, welcoming him into the celebration.

Přemysl glances at them in confusion, not expecting the warm welcome.

Theo’s aunt speaks in a compassionate tone.

Theo’s aunt

Line 11) Someone fix him up a plate. He must be hungry.

Theo’s cousin speaks in a friendly manner, showcasing the empty seats at the table.

Theo’s cousin

Line 12) Nice to meet you, Orlin. Have a seat.

Přemysl rigidly seats himself down at the dining table, glancing at everyone timidly.

Theo places his hand on Přemysl’s shoulder, speaking to him reassuringly.

Theo

Line 13) Are you a picky eater?

Přemysl shakes his head no.

Theo responds joyfully.

Theo

Line 14) Great! I’ll make sure to fill your plate up with a lot of goodies.

Přemysl glances at Theo appreciatively.

Theo’s grandmother starts a conversation with Přemysl, curious about him.

Theo’s grandmother

Line 15) So… How do you know Teodoro*?

*Refer back to episode 38, lines 10 and 11.

As Theo and Přemysl eat together, Přemysl gets acquainted with all of his family members.

*Shot cuts to Ambrož, Oumou, her brother, and parents in downtown Detroit assembling as they wait for the “ball to drop” (it’s the letter D) for the New Year’s.

They all make their way to a café to kill some time before the letter drops.

They order all kinds of desserts, tea, and hot chocolate* at the café.

*Refer back to episode 41, line 94.

Ambrož speaks at Oumou in a low voice protectively.

Ambrož

Line 16) Take it easy on the desserts. I wouldn’t want you to catch another allergy*.

*Remember that Oumou caught an allergy when she and Ambrož went to a café for the first time (refer back to episode 19, lines 54"60, etc).

Oumou smirks at Ambrož happily, nodding her head from his remembrance and consideration.

Oumou’s father speaks in an appreciative manner.

Oumou’s dad

Line 17) It’s very delightful for you to have brought us to a café. Thank you.

Ambrož responds charmingly.

Ambrož

Line 18) It’s my pleasure. Please enjoy the sweets~

Oumou’s mother speaks curiously.

Oumou’s mom

Line 19) Are you all excited for the New Year?

Everyone nods their heads hesitantly, besides Lamine, who nods his head automatically.

Oumou’s mother glances at everyone in confusion.

She responds in a mutual manner.

Oumou’s mom

Line 20) I anticipated some more enthusiasm from you guys, but I feel quite the same way.

Oumou speaks worrisomely.

Oumou

Line 21) It’s kind of scary. Time has been going by so quickly. Before we knew it, it was the end of the year once again.

Oumou speaks in a tone of distress.

Oumou

Line 22) Though a New Year offers a fresh start, it still feels pressuring to delve into the unknown, especially when you have huge goals set for yourself to accomplish.

Oumou’s father responds sympathetically, hoping to reassure Oumou.

Oumou’s dad

Line 23) That’s understandable. I’m sure everyone’s New Year’s resolutions are quite big.

Oumou’s father speaks in a hopeful manner.

Oumou’s dad

Line 24) I wish you all the best of luck with those goals!

Ambrož responds appreciatively.

Ambrož

Line 25) Thank you. Same goes for you~

Oumou speaks in a curious tone, including Lamine in the conversation since he’s been quiet all night.

Oumou

Line 26) What do you think, ‘Mine? Are you excited for the New Year's?

Lamine responds joyfully.

Lamine

Line 27) Honestly, I am.

Everyone glances at Lamine in surprise.

Oumou’s mother speaks eagerly.

Oumou’s mom

Line 28) You can’t just leave us with that. Elaborate some more.

Lamine explains agreeably.

Lamine

Line 29) Well, I agree with ‘Mou. When we set goals for ourselves that we deeply wish to fulfill during the year, the pressure is on…

Lamine speaks in a hopeful manner.

Lamine

Line 30) But at the same time, a New Year opens doors of opportunities for everyone.

Lamine speaks reassuringly.

Lamine

Line 31) Believe it or not, we’re not the only ones setting these huge goals for ourselves. Everyone else is on the same page.

Lamine speaks in a tone of admiration.

Lamine

Line 32) Thus, things will shift since everyone is determined to accomplish their goals.

Lamine

Line 33) We’re truly all in this together.

Lamine speaks encouragingly.

Lamine

Line 34) It’s important to have everything in moderation.

Lamine speaks precariously.

Lamine

Line 35) If we overdo things, that will lead to burnout.

Lamine speaks in a tone of determination.

Lamine

Line 36) Dissecting your goals into baby steps and making progress every day will amount to our results.

Lamine speaks in an analytical manner.

Lamine

Line 37) The issue is that everyone focuses on the end result first, not giving themselves the chance to appreciate the beauty of the journey.

Lamine

Line 38) Life isn’t a competition. There isn’t a trophy for someone who reaches the finish line first.

Lamine

Line 39) Everyone is on their own wavelength. Nobody is behind, and nobody is in front.

Lamine speaks enthusiastically.

Lamine

Line 40) This “marathon” is simply dedicated to solely one person who blazes their own trail in life.

Lamine

Line 41) Sure, our goals may seem grueling and daunting, but without them, our lives would be boring.

Lamine speaks charismatically.

Lamine

Line 42) In my opinion, easy things are lackluster. When a challenge lies ahead, it adds spice to life.

Lamine speaks in a credible manner.

Lamine

Line 43) Giving it our best is all that matters.

Lamine speaks happily.

Lamine

Line 44) Which is why I’m excited for the New Year’s.

Lamine

Line 45) Sure, technically speaking, it is simply just another day of life…

Lamine speaks in a relaxed tone.

Lamine

Line 46) But we’ve built this holiday as a chance to rejuvenate ourselves.

Lamine

Line 47) So, instead of doubting ourselves and putting a bunch of self-inflicted pressure on what lies ahead, I say that we simply go about life just the way it is.

Lamine

Line 48) Yes, we should accomplish our goals, and stay productive and whatnot…

Lamine speaks optimistically.

Lamine

Line 49) But we shouldn’t bash ourselves if things don’t work out the way we want them to.

Lamine

Line 50) Various things are outside of our control when it comes to results.

Lamine speaks acceptingly.

Lamine

Line 51) Sure, it’s unfair, but this is just the way life is. Trial and error. It’s a constant experiment in the works.

Lamine speaks appreciatively.

Lamine

Line 52) Instead of complaining, we should be grateful for all the things around us.

Lamine

Line 53) We focus too much on negativity, worries, doubts, blah blah blah…

Lamine

Line 54) But we don’t realize the positivity that beams all around us.

Lamine speaks in a promising tone.

Lamine

Line 55) There is always light at the end of the tunnel.

Lamine

Line 56) And even if there isn’t, there isn’t any harm in thinking that there is one.

Lamine clarifies himself, hoping that no one misunderstands.

Lamine

Line 57) I'm not saying to put up a false front of artificial positivity when we're truly going through some things, but practicing gratitude can bring us hope.

Lamine speaks in a positive manner.

Lamine

Line 58) Doing those things and sticking by our morals will obviously lead to great outcomes.

Lamine speaks faithfully.

Lamine

Line 59) Good people deserve good things.

Lamine

Line 60) Which is exactly why we’re fully capable of fulfilling our dreams.

Everyone at the table glances at Lamine in delightful surprise.

Oumou responds proudly.

Oumou

Line 61) That’s some deep stuff, ‘Mine. You’ve most definitely lifted our spirits.

Ambrož speaks agreeably, happily smiling at Lamine.

Ambrož

Line 62) Yes. Thank you for your encouragement and reassurance.

Oumou’s father speaks in a thankful manner.

Oumou’s dad

Line 63) I love hearing your passion. Thank you for cheering us up~

Oumou’s mother speaks joyfully, impressed by Lamine’s answer.

Oumou’s mom

Line 64) Good thing I asked him to elaborate, huh?

Everyone at the table laughs amusingly.

Lamine speaks embracingly.

Lamine

Line 65) Let’s enjoy these last few moments of the year~

*Shot cuts back to Přemysl and Theo celebrating New Year’s at his place.

The both of them have finished eating dinner, and Přemysl fully got acquainted with Theo’s family members.

Theo speaks in a low voice so that his family members at dinner won't overhear him while he apologizes playfully to Přemysl.

Theo

Line 66) I’m sorry if they chatted your socks off.

Přemysl speaks in a reassuring tone.

Přemysl

Line 67) Don’t worry. They didn’t.

Theo speaks in a suggestive manner.

Theo

Line 68) Do you want to head somewhere more quiet? Like my room?

Přemysl answers anxiously, feeling worried about Theo’s family members.

Přemysl

Line 69) Wouldn’t it be rude to just leave?

Theo speaks in a relaxed tone.

Theo

Line 70) Not at all. We’ll get back for the countdown when midnight rolls around.

Theo speaks encouragingly.

Theo

Line 71) Let’s talk with each other while the others enjoy themselves bustled up.

Přemysl replies agreeably.

Přemysl

Line 72) Sure. If you don’t mind.

Happily responding, Theo informs his mother about excusing himself from the dinner table along with Přemysl.

Theo

Line 73) Of course not. Mom! Orlin and I are heading to my room.

Theo’s mom speaks in a tone of approval.

Theo’s mom

Line 74) Sounds good. Just make your way back to us when it’s close to midnight.

Theo nods his head confirmingly.

He and Přemysl head to his room to chat with each other.

Přemysl seats himself on Theo’s bed while Theo sits at his desk facing his bed.

Přemysl speaks curiously.

Přemysl

Line 75) What did you want to talk about?

Theo speaks in an open manner.

Theo

Line 76) Anything. Do you mind if I ask you questions?

Přemysl responds casually.

Přemysl

Line 77) Not at all. What are you curious about?

Theo questions Přemysl apprehensively.

Theo

Line 78) Don’t think that I’m trying to be a party pooper, but did you figure out what you’re going to do about your brother*?

*Remember that Theo and Přemysl had a conversation about Ambrož (refer back to episode 38, lines 68"121, etc).

Přemysl responds hesitantly.

Přemysl

Line 79) You’re the one who said that I should wait till I’m certain, so that’s what I’m doing.

Theo responds nervously, noticing the change in atmosphere from his curiosity.

Theo

Line 80) Ah. I see. Best of luck.

Přemysl nods his head awkwardly.

Theo asks him another question, trying to break up the tense tension between them.

Theo

Line 81) Uh. How are you feeling about the New Year?

Přemysl shrugs, responding indifferently.

Přemysl

Line 82) It’s just another day for me. What about you?

Theo speaks in a tone of enthusiasm.

Theo

Line 83) I see it as a fresh start to things. So, I’m quite pumped.

Přemysl questions Přemysl inquisitively.

Přemysl

Line 84) What’s your resolution?

Theo speaks in a lenient manner.

Theo

Line 85) It’s seen as bad luck to open up about those kinds of things, but I don’t really care.

Theo explains himself in a tone of hope.

Theo

Line 86) I just want to live it up~

Přemysl speaks confusingly.

Přemysl

Line 87) That’s it?

Theo speaks confirmingly.

Theo

Line 88) Yeah. Were you expecting more?

Přemysl processes Theo’s resolution.

Přemysl

Line 89) Sort of, but I guess that’s not a bad goal. I actually like how simple it is.

Theo speaks in an eager manner.

Theo

Line 90) What about you? What’s your resolution?

Přemysl speaks in a tone of dejection, feeling hopeless about his resolution.

Přemysl

Line 91) It’s been the same for so long. I’m trying to find the solution to all my problems*.

*Přemysl is alluding to finding the cure to vampirism, which was similar to Ambrož’s initial resolution (refer back to episode 30, line 45, etc).

Theo responds puzzlingly.

Theo

Line 92) Huh. That’s quite peculiar.

Přemysl speaks in a tone of clarification.

Přemysl

Line 93) I’m not telling you verbatim what my resolution is, but that’s basically the gist of it.

Theo speaks in a nervous manner.

Theo

Line 94) I don’t want to burst your bubble, but haven’t you already found out that there isn’t a solution to all of your problems?

Theo

Line 95) You’re wishing for the impossible. Something like that doesn’t exist.

Theo

Line 96) Even if one has everything they’ve ever wanted, problems will arise, one way or another.

Přemysl speaks confidently.

Přemysl

Line 97) My problems are unordinary. This thing I’m chasing IS indeed the solution to all my issues.

Přemysl

Line 98) I know that sounds unbelievable, but it’s true. I just can’t let you know.

Přemysl speaks in an apologetic tone.

Přemysl

Line 99) I’m sorry that it seems like I can’t ever tell you about things.

Theo responds reassuringly.

Theo

Line 100) That’s fine. Though I don’t know what you’re dealing with, I understand.

Theo defends his claim.

Theo

Line 101) I know that saying I understand contradicts me saying that I know what you’re dealing with, but I mean it. I don’t know how else to describe what I’m trying to convey to you.

Přemysl responds in a doubtful tone.

Přemysl

Line 102) I’m not convinced.

Theo speaks in a manner of confusion, glancing at Přemysl in shock, taken aback by his statement.

Theo

Line 103) I’m sorry?

Přemysl speaks in a tone of disconcertion.

Přemysl

Line 104) What is it that you see in me to say such a thing?

End of episode.
