Episode 41:

The day is December 31st, 2004. It's a Friday evening.

After Oumou’s parents agree to spend the New Year’s including Ambrož because Oumou doesn't want to exclude him after the both of them made plans even though her parents show up unexpectedly, Ambrož and Oumou prepare dinner for all of them to dig into, starting his conversation by formally introducing himself.

Ambrož speaks in a welcoming manner.

Ambrož

Line 1) If there’s anything you guys would like to ask me, please don’t hesitate. I’d be more than happy to answer any of your questions.

Oumou's father speaks in a curious tone.

Oumou’s dad

Line 2) You mentioned recently getting into this relationship with my daughter*. When exactly was that, if you don’t mind me asking?

*Refer back to episode 40, line 104.

Ambrož speaks in a relaxed manner.

Ambrož

Line 3) I don’t mind you asking at all. After all, you have every right to know…

Ambrož glances at Oumou for confirmation to reveal the information her father is curious to know.

She nods her head reassuringly, with Ambrož answering her father’s question happily.

Ambrož

Line 4) We got together on her birthday*.

*Refer back to episode 36, lines 99"101.

Oumou’s parents look at her in shock.

Oumou’s dad

Line 5) You really weren’t kidding when you said that the both of you got together recently.

Ambrož lets out a chuckle of joy, speaking in a fond tone.

Ambrož

Line 6) Yeah. I didn’t expect us to get together on her birthday either, but the timing felt more than right. It wasn’t even my birthday, yet I got a gift in return.

Oumou's father speaks in a manner of seeking clarification.

Oumou’s dad

Line 7) Yet, you also mentioned that the both of you have known each other for around 3 months and that you also moved to Detroit right around the same time as Oumou*…

*Refer back to episode 40, line 103 and 104.

Oumou’s dad

Line 8) So, I’m assuming that’s how you all got to know each other?

Ambrož nods his head confirmingly.

Oumou’s mother chips in, speaking in a curious tone.

Oumou’s mom

Line 9) That’s quite the swift connection. How has it been going for the both of you?

Ambrož happily looks at Oumou, holding her hand affectionately.

Oumou glances back at everyone timidly.

Ambrož responds cheerfully.

Ambrož

Line 10) It’s been utterly amazing! I sit next to her proudly, knowing that I’m her significant other~

Oumou’s mother questions Ambrož inquisitively, glancing at him cautiously.

Oumou’s mom

Line 11) Is this your first time being in a relationship?

Ambrož nods his head in a sincere manner.

Oumou’s mother feels Ambrož’s authenticity, loosening up from his reassurance.

She thanks him appreciatively.

Oumou’s mom

Line 12) Well, we all appreciate you sticking by our daughter’s side during her move. It’s relieving knowing that she has someone like you here.

Ambrož replies passionately.

Ambrož

Line 13) It’s been a pleasure~ I can assure you all that I’ll continue doing my best. Oumou means a lot to me, so I want to be the best version of myself that I possibly can be.

Oumou’s father diverts the topic of the discussion, curious about Ambrož’s knowledge about Oumou.

Oumou’s dad

Line 14) I’m sure you’re aware of her musical pursuits by now, right?

Ambrož nods his head agreeably.

Oumou’s dad

Line 15) I’d like to hear your input. What do you think?

Ambrož sticks up for Oumou, speaking about her admirably without any hesitations.

Ambrož

Line 16) Though she had to give up things like her education and hometown to pursue her dreams, I find Oumou's perseverance immensely praiseworthy.

Oumou glances at Ambrož in surprise from his swift answer.

Ambrož speaks about Oumou proudly.

Ambrož

Line 17) Your daughter is a very talented musician. I believe she has everything it takes to make her dreams a reality.

Ambrož speaks faithfully.

Ambrož

Line 18) The pathway she’s on will surely lead her down to success, one way or another.

Oumou’s father speaks in a tone of disagreement.

Oumou’s dad

Line 19) Wouldn’t you categorize setting aside school and a place that you used to call home as a risky choice?

A split moment of silence goes on between all of them.

Oumou’s mother and brother glance at her apprehensively.

Oumou glances at Ambrož in guilt from her father’s blunt question.

Ambrož responds swiftly, trying his best to moderate Oumou and her father’s opinions.

Ambrož

Line 20) Definitely, but with the field she’s in, things like that are inevitable.

Ambrož speaks in a supportive manner, continuing to hold Oumou’s hand compassionately.

Ambrož

Line 21) With her attentive dedication, determination, and commitment, I fully support her decision to try things out.

Ambrož continues to elaborate emphatically.

Ambrož

Line 22) Stability is important, but fulfillment is even more important, in my opinion.

Ambrož

Line 23) Oumou had told me how unfulfilled she felt going to college* when she wanted to be involved in the industry as soon as possible, so I believe the choice she’s made is completely valid.

*Refer back to episode 12, lines 51"53, etc.

Ambrož speaks in a manner of validation, glancing at Oumou reassuringly.

Ambrož

Line 24) It’s a risky decision, but she has several things to lean on to get to where she wants to be.

Oumou’s father speaks in a tone of disapproval.

Oumou’s dad

Line 25) I beg to differ. If she had pursued a more lucrative field and secured a job within that profession, she’d have stability and enough funds to pursue this hobby on the side.

Everyone at the table goes silent from the interjection.

They all glance at Ambrož for reassurance.

Oumou’s father continues expressing his opinion.

Oumou’s dad

Line 26) But since she’s decided to go against the safety net I encouraged her to be in, she has put herself in a situation where she doesn’t know what lies ahead of her.

Oumou’s father speaks in a tone of concern.

Oumou’s dad

Line 27) In the event that her dreams do not come true, her time would have been wasted when she could have spent it doing something else that would have guaranteed her more success.

Oumou’s father speaks stubbornly.

Oumou’s dad

Line 28) I still stand by that opinion to this day, though she does not want to listen to me.

Oumou’s father speaks in a worrisome manner, glancing at Oumou in concern.

Oumou’s dad

Line 29) At the end of the day, she’s my daughter, and there’s only so much I can say. It’s up to her to decide what she wants to go through with.

Oumou’s father speaks in a tone of apprehension.

Oumou’s dad

Line 30) However, her opposition is particularly why I’m unsatisfied with her current circumstances; thus, I’m uncertain about how to offer her the support she needs from me.

Oumou intervenes, standing up for herself.

She speaks in a bitter manner.

Oumou

Line 31) Though I’m doing the things that you don’t want me to do, that doesn’t mean that I don’t deserve your solace. You’re my dad. Things like that should be unconditional, no matter what.

Oumou speaks disappointedly.

Oumou

Line 32) Feeling "uncertain" about providing the support I need sounds like a convenient excuse. You’re well aware of how to do that; you just don’t want to because you doubt me.

Oumou

Line 33) That explains why we’ve barely kept in touch ever since I moved.

Ambrož caresses Oumou's hand, glancing at her reassuringly.

She nods her head for him to attempt to mediate their differences.

Ambrož speaks in a tone of determination.

Ambrož

Line 34) Mr. Sao*... I completely understand where you’re coming from about putting passions on the back burner to secure stability, especially within this economy…

*Oumou’s last name (refer back to episode 9, line 36).

Ambrož speaks in a manner of enthusiasm.

Ambrož

Line 35) However, it’s adamant that Oumou would much rather take matters into her own hands, disregarding whether or not things will work out.

Ambrož continues elaborating charismatically.

Ambrož

Line 36) The point of doing such a thing is not centralized on the outcome but more on the effort.

Ambrož

Line 37) Let’s say Oumou went down the “safety net” plan you were talking about earlier…

Ambrož speaks in a tone of dejection, picturing Oumou in her father’s preferred scenario.

Ambrož

Line 38) Sure, she’d have stability by her side, but her fulfillment would be gone.

Ambrož

Line 39) She’d look back at her years, wishing she had done something about her passion rather than going down a different path.

Ambrož speaks in a manner of passion.

Ambrož

Line 40) Doing something you don’t want to do takes a lot of grit.

Ambrož

Line 41) A fairly compensated job requires rigorous education and, thus, long hours of commitment.

Ambrož

Line 42) Her time, energy, and efforts would go into that, but all she'd get in return would be stability and nothing else.

Ambrož speaks sympathetically.

Ambrož

Line 43) Doing all of those things, especially if your heart is in the wrong place, will lead you to feeling miserable.

Ambrož

Line 44) Thus, what passion would be left in her after years of putting her dreams to the side?

Ambrož

Line 45) Of course, it’s never too late to pursue things and she could easily do that after securing a stable job…

Ambrož speaks in a tone of exuberance.

Ambrož

Line 46) However, she wants to do something now, in the present.

Ambrož

Line 47) She’s young, fiery, determined, headstrong…

Ambrož

Line 48) Having to wait when you want to do the things you love, especially knowing you have everything it takes to get there, is crushing.

Ambrož speaks supportively.

Ambrož

Line 49) For this reason, I continue to support her in her quest to achieve her dreams.

Ambrož

Line 50) She wants to do this more than anything else in the world, so I don’t see a reason why she shouldn’t be able to.

Oumou glances at Ambrož sentimentally, feeling touched by his words.

Ambrož

Line 51) I know you all are worried about whether things will work out, but I encourage you all to trust your daughter some more.

Ambrož

Line 52) She’s well aware of the risks and sacrifices she’s taking to do this.

Ambrož speaks devotedly.

Ambrož

Line 53) It’s never a waste to try*.

*Refer back to episode 11, lines 37 and 38.

Ambrož

Line 54) Even if things don’t work out, which I wholeheartedly believe that they will, and even if they don’t, it doesn’t seem like Oumou would give up; at least she still tried.

Ambrož speaks in a manner of excitement.

Ambrož

Line 55) She’ll look back at her efforts with fulfillment, knowing that she put in hard work to make her dreams a reality.

Ambrož

Line 56) Maybe then she will go back to school. It’s never too late to start from scratch. It’s always there for her.

Ambrož

Line 57) But I assure you, with the mindset she’s in right now, plan B is the last thing on her mind.

Ambrož speaks in a tone of compassion.

Ambrož

Line 58) I find that extremely admirable. It shows that she’s solely focusing on this dream, ready to give it her all at any point.

Ambrož speaks encouragingly.

Ambrož

Line 59) If we support her on her journey, we’re showing her that she can lean on us whenever she has to.

Ambrož elaborates in a protective manner.

Ambrož

Line 60) Hurdles with aspirations such as hers are inevitable, so it’s important to remind her that she’s more than capable of doing this.

Ambrož speaks upliftingly.

Ambrož

Line 61) Though she’s expressed that she appreciates my support, the support she needs the most from is her family.

Ambrož speaks empathetically.

Ambrož

Line 62) I, myself, was and am in a similar situation as Oumou.

He explains himself sentimentally.

Ambrož

Line 63) I played things safely all my life, and it’s led to misery. I can completely testify to that.

Ambrož

Line 64) Once I took matters into my own hands to do something and it actually paid off, that level of happiness is something I wish for everyone in this world to feel.

Ambrož

Line 65) But you can only really feel that sense of happiness after taking a huge risk.

Ambrož speaks in a wistful manner.

Ambrož

Line 66) I sacrificed the connection of a loved one to get to where I am.

Ambrož

Line 67) Though I’ve been the happiest I’ve been in a while, I still yearn for this loved one’s support…

Ambrož continues fueling his sense of encouragement.

Ambrož

Line 68) Which is why I can’t emphasize enough how important that sense of security is.

Ambrož speaks understandingly.

Ambrož

Line 69) You don’t necessarily have to be on the same page, but it’ll be beneficial to Oumou if she’d know that you all are at least there for her sincerely.

Ambrož speaks apologetically.

Ambrož

Line 70) I know that it is most certainly not my place to intervene in such personal family affairs, and I apologize if I’ve overstepped any boundaries, but I must stick up for Oumou as her partner.

Ambrož

Line 71) Please forgive my unsolicited advice.

Oumou’s father speaks in a tone of reassurance.

Oumou’s dad

Line 72) This advice wasn’t unsolicited. I specifically asked for your input*.

*Refer back to line 15 of this episode.

Ambrož responds awkwardly, speaking ashamedly.

Ambrož

Line 73) Right. I’m still sorry for talking back to you.

Oumou’s father speaks in a relaxed manner, not finding Ambrož’s input offensive.

Oumou’s dad

Line 74) That’s alright. I wanted to hear your thoughts.

Oumou’s father speaks in a tone of validation, praising Ambrož’s responses.

Oumou’s dad

Line 75) You have most definitely brought up some great points.

Oumou’s father speaks appreciatively.

Oumou’s dad

Line 76) I appreciate you being with our girl. I believe she has found an amazing partner.

Ambrož speaks in a bashful manner, feeling flustered.

Ambrož

Line 77) I-I should be the one giving your family my appreciation. Thank you for raising such a wonderful daughter. She means the world to me.

Ambrož speaks in a privileged tone.

Ambrož

Line 78) Since you all are her family, it is my duty to get to know you all on a deeper level.

Ambrož

Line 79) I would like to say how much of an honor it is to have met you all today, and I would love to further fuel our connection.

Oumou’s mother chips in, speaking gratefully.

Oumou’s mom

Line 80) You have most definitely impressed us with this conversation and dinner. We have had such a delightful stay so far~

Ambrož replies to her, speaking cheerfully.

Ambrož

Line 81) It’s my sincerest pleasure to hear that!

All of them continue conversing with each other as they eat dinner until the day rings closer to midnight.

Ambrož handles the dishes after dinner while Oumou speaks with her parents on the balcony of her apartment.

Lamine stays inside, approaching Ambrož.

He speaks in a timid tone.

Lamine

Line 82) You must be exhausted. Why don’t I do the dishes?

Ambrož happily smiles at Lamine's politeness.

Ambrož

Line 83) As I said before we had dinner, you are my guest*. I can’t possibly ask you to do things I’m responsible for.

*Refer back to episode 40, line 62.

Lamine lets out a sigh of defeat.

Lamine

Line 84) But I want to make myself useful.

Ambrož reassures Lamine joyfully.

Ambrož

Line 85) Your company is more than enough. I’m thrilled that you and your family visited~Your company is more than enough. I’m thrilled that you and your family visited us today~

Lamine speaks in a tone of disbelief.

Lamine

Line 86) Do you really mean that?

Ambrož responds sincerely.

Ambrož

Line 87) Of course, I do. The arrival was unexpected, but things are sailing smoothly.

Ambrož speaks in an apologetic manner.

Ambrož

Line 88) I apologize if we excluded you from the conversation at dinner. I also would like to thank you for not saying anything about your awareness of my relationship with Oumou earlier*. You saved our butts.

*Refer back to episode 40, lines 47 and 48.

Lamine releases a chuckle of amusement.

He explains his stance indifferently.

Lamine

Line 89) That’s not an issue. Besides, when “adulty” discussions like that occur during dinner, I just keep quiet because I don’t want to be affiliated.

Ambrož speaks in a tone of guilt.

Ambrož

Line 90) I’m still sorry if you felt uncomfortable.

Lamine speaks in a manner of acceptance.

Lamine

Line 91) That’s out of your control. This confrontation was bound to happen one way or another.

Ambrož speaks in a tone of remorse.

Ambrož

Line 92) It’s still unfair that you were in the middle of it.

Lamine speaks reassuringly.

Lamine

Line 93) Again, that’s out of your control. What were you supposed to do?

An idea comes across Ambrož’s mind.

He speaks in a manner of exhilaration as he suggests his idea to Lamine.

Ambrož

Line 94) Why don’t I make it up to you by buying some hot chocolate?

Lamine speaks in a tone of confusion.

Lamine

Line 95) How? Are we going somewhere?

Ambrož speaks charismatically, smirking at Lamine smugly.

Ambrož

Line 96) After Oumou finishes talking with her parents, we’re going to head downtown to watch the ball drop for New Year’s.

Ambrož speaks in a manner of determination.

Ambrož

Line 97) I’m sure there should be shops all around downtown. One place is bound to sell hot chocolate.

Lamine responds in an insistent tone.

Lamine

Line 98) You don’t have to get me anything. I appreciate the consideration.

Ambrož

Line 99) I insist. Besides, we’re going to drink something anyway to clink our cups together when the countdown to midnight starts.

Lamine agrees bashfully.

Lamine

Line 100) …In that case, I don’t mind.

Ambrož happily responds, feeling relieved to hear Lamine’s agreement.

Ambrož

Line 101) Yay! Sounds great!

End of episode.
