Episode 17:

The day is October 18th, 2004. It's Monday nighttime.

Ambrož arrives home, heading upstairs to Přemysl’s room, knocking on his door.

Ambrož

Line 1) I’m back home, Přem. Let’s talk*.

*Refer back to episode 15, line 91.

Přemysl opens the door for Ambrož, wrapped up in a blanket, somberly staring at him.

Ambrož glances at Přemysl in worry, speaking in a manner of concern.

Ambrož

Line 2) So, what happened earlier today?

Ambrož and Přemysl sit themselves on Přemysl’s bed.

Přemysl crosses his arms, sluggishly sitting on his bed with bad posture, pouting sadly.

He speaks in an upsetting tone.

Přemysl

Line 3) I got silent when you asked me if I made any new friends today because I didn’t*.

*Refer back to episode 15, line 81.

Ambrož places his hand on Přemysl’s shoulder reassuringly, speaking in a tone of consolation.

Ambrož

Line 4) That’s okay. There’s no need to feel so down.

Přemysl speaks in a hopeless tone.

Přemysl

Line 5) The first day of school is when everyone bustles up, making connections with new people and establishing cliques.

Přemysl

Line 6) Not one person approached me today. I barely spoke a word.

Přemysl

Line 7) If I wasn’t able to get in touch with anyone on the first day, who am I to think that I'll make friends at any point in time during school?

Ambrož speaks in a dismissive tone.

Ambrož

Line 8) Přem, this is YOUR first day at school because you registered late. All the other kids have been attending for around a month. Don't you think you're kind of overreacting right now?

Ambrož speaks in a faithful manner.

Ambrož

Line 9) You will make friends. You just have to put yourself out there.

Ambrož

Line 10) Don’t expect someone to reach out to you first. You have to be the one to make the first move.

Ambrož

Line 11) Take initiative. Don’t wait around until someone notices you.

Ambrož

Line 12) I’m sure several other kids are on the same boat as you.

Ambrož

Line 13) Step up and reach out to them. You have no idea how grateful they’ll be for your friendliness.

Ambrož speaks in a sympathetic tone.

Ambrož

Line 14) I know doing that is easier said than done, especially since we’ve been staying abstinent from human connection for decades…

Ambrož

Line 15) But you were able to make me your friend. That counts for something.

Ambrož speaks in an encouraging manner.

Ambrož

Line 16) Take things easy. You can start by introducing yourself to your deskmates in class.

Ambrož

Line 17) After all, I’m assuming you’ll be seated next to them the entire school year. Might as well get to know them while you’re at it to make class more enjoyable.

Ambrož

Line 18) Go along with something under the lines of complimenting them, for example, saying you like their shirt, and then introduce yourself afterwards.

Přemysl speaks in an apprehensive manner.

Přemysl

Line 19) What if things get awkward?

Ambrož

Line 20) At least you know you tried. That’s all that matters.

Ambrož speaks in a resilient tone.

Ambrož

Line 21) Don’t give up if someone rejects you from speaking with them. There are several other kids that will give you a chance.

Ambrož

Line 22) Someone will stick. Trust me.

Přemysl lays down on his bed, letting out a sigh of exhaustion.

Ambrož

Line 23) Another great way to make friends is by joining a club*. You should definitely take that into consideration.

*Refer back to episode 15, line 84.

Ambrož

Line 24) Other than that, are your classes really okay*? Or were you just saying yes to get me off your back earlier today?

*Refer back to episode 15, line 79.

Přemysl speaks in a tone of indifference.

Přemysl

Line 25) They seem fine so far. But I won’t put in much effort to do well in them.

Přemysl

Line 26) I’m not going to school to excel in academics. I’m just trying to make friends.

Ambrož speaks in a suggestive manner.

Ambrož

Line 27) Either way, showing up and not trying is a waste of time.

Ambrož speaks encouragingly.

Ambrož

Line 28) Do well in school. Study if you have to. It’s good to brush up on your knowledge or even learn something new.

Ambrož

Line 29) That’s another great way to get closer with friends. You could host group study sessions to help each other out.

Přemysl sighs exhaustedly, speaking in a curious manner.

Přemysl

Line 30) Besides that, how was your date with Oumou today?

Ambrož speaks in a tone of excitement.

Ambrož

Line 31) It was great! I really like hanging out with her!

Přemysl hesitates before saying his next statement.

Line 32) Přemysl’s inner thoughts: I would tell him not to get too close with Oumou right now, but he expressed his frustrations with my constant reminders yesterday*. I should keep in mind how he feels.

*Refer back to episode 15, line 35.

Přemysl

Line 33) I’m glad that at least one of us is enjoying enacting our plans.

Ambrož speaks in a comforting manner.

Ambrož

Line 34) You’ll be fine. Just give things your best effort.

Ambrož speaks in a brotherly tone.

Ambrož

Line 35) Anyways, you should head to bed. It’s important to get around 8 hours of sleep each night since you’re going to school.

Přemysl speaks in an agreeable manner.

Přemysl

Line 36) Yeah. You’re right. I’ll hit the hay.

Přemysl

Line 37) Thank you for the cupcakes earlier*. They were delicious.

*Refer back to episode 15, line 88.

Ambrož happily smiles, speaking in a fulfilling tone.

Ambrož

Line 38) I’m glad you enjoyed them!

Přemysl speaks in an inquisitive manner.

Přemysl

Line 39) Just out of curiosity, what will you be doing tomorrow?

Přemysl

Line 40) You’re not working. So, what else is there to do?

Přemysl

Line 41) Surely, it’s not hanging out with Oumou during the day. I’m sure she has work to do.

Ambrož

Line 42) You’re right. She has work during the day.

Ambrož

Line 43) Today I cleaned the entire house, which took a while, so I’m probably going to rest tomorrow.

Přemysl speaks in a curious tone.

Přemysl

Line 44) What about the day after that?

Ambrož stays silent, unable to come up with an answer.

Ambrož

Line 45) I’m not sure. I’ll cross that bridge when I get to it.

Ambrož throws out some ideas.

Ambrož

Line 46) Probably do some more research on vampirism. Maybe even get in touch with people in Detroit that have ideas on what the cure is.

Ambrož

Line 47) Other than that, I’ll probably pick up a hobby. Maybe volunteer somewhere.

Přemysl

Line 48) Just make yourself useful.

Ambrož nods his head in agreeingly.

Ambrož

Line 49) ‘Kay. I’m headed to bed. Good night.

Přemysl

Line 50) Good night.

Přemysl gets tucked into bed, turning off his nightstand lamp.

Ambrož gets up to leave, starting to shut Přemysl’s door.

Přemysl suddenly speaks.

Přemysl

Line 51) Ambrož…

Ambrož stops in his tracks, glancing at Přemysl tucked into bed, sleeping on the side, facing his back on Ambrož.

Ambrož

Line 52) Yes, Přem?

Přemysl speaks in an affectionate tone.

Přemysl

Line 53) I love you, bro. Thank you for staying by my side all these years.

Ambrož happily smiles.

Ambrož

Line 54) I love you too, little bro. Sleep well.

Ambrož leaves, leading himself into his room to head to sleep.

The next day rolls around.

The day is October 19th, 2004. It's a Tuesday morning.

Ambrož’s narration:

Line 55) Tuesday went similarly to Monday.

Line 56) I dropped Přemysl off at school, wishing him good luck.

Line 57) Then I drove home, relaxing on the couch all day while watching some TV.

Line 58) After some time, I had to pick Přemysl up from school.

Line 59) He was a lot happier today than yesterday, saying he spoke to someone in class.

Line 60) After dropping him off at home, I drove to Oumou’s restaurant.

Line 61) I witnessed her sing once again, feeling the same way I felt yesterday.

Line 62) I still can’t quite wrap my head around the fact that I know her.

Line 63) After we approached each other, I drove her to another surprise location.

Line 64) This time, I brought her to a bookstore.

Ambrož and Oumou head into a bookstore, browsing around the area together.

Oumou speaks in a curious tone.

Oumou

Line 65) Do you read?

Ambrož sighs, recollecting his reading history.

Ambrož

Line 66) Not as much as I should. I read a lot when I was a kid and teenager, though.

Ambrož speaks in an affectionately inquisitive manner.

Ambrož

Line 67) What about you?

Oumou speaks in a tone of disappointment.

Oumou

Line 68) I was in this huge phase where I was reading books one after the other, but now I’m in such a reading slump.

Oumou

Line 69) Whenever I come to bookstores like these, I always get filled with so much motivation to read and never do.

Oumou

Line 70) That results in me buying a book I’ll most likely never read.

Ambrož chuckles, speaking in an understanding manner.

Ambrož

Line 71) I completely get where you’re coming from.

Ambrož

Line 72) Whether we buy a book or not, the environment of a bookstore is just so comforting. Don’t you think so?

Oumou speaks agreeably.

Oumou

Line 73) That’s what makes the visit worthwhile.

Ambrož

Line 74) I’ll tell you what, if we find books we like, why don’t the both of us read together?

Ambrož

Line 75) If we involve each other in our reading, wouldn’t that make us get out of our reading slump?

Oumou smiles, digging Ambrož’s idea.

Oumou

Line 76) That’s a great idea! It’d be fun to read together!

Oumou speaks in a suggestive tone.

Oumou

Line 77) We can take turns reading and whatnot!

Oumou speaks in a curious manner.

Oumou

Line 78) So, what’s your favorite genre?

Ambrož speaks in a timid tone.

Ambrož

Line 79) Romance…

Oumou speaks enthusiastically, agreeing with Ambrož’s response.

Oumou

Line 80) Me too! It’s so hard to read anything that’s not associated with romance.

Ambrož drops the shy act, embracing his true interest, knowing that it’s mutual between him and Oumou.

Ambrož

Line 81) Right?! It just keeps things so interesting!

Oumou

Line 82) Now we can narrow down our options.

Ambrož and Oumou head to the romance section of the bookstore, browsing the selections they have.

Ambrož speaks in a suggestive manner.

Ambrož

Line 83) Do you want a historical romance?

Oumou speaks in a hesitant tone.

Oumou

Line 84) … Those tend to be quite raunchy.

Ambrož speaks in a manner of shock.

Ambrož

Line 85) Oh…

Oumou chuckles.

Oumou

Line 86) I know, right? Quite ironic, huh?

Oumou

Line 87) You’d think that people back then would be depicted as prim and proper individuals.

Ambrož speaks in an implicative manner.

Ambrož

Line 88) What about fantasy?

Oumou speaks in a disinterested tone.

Oumou

Line 89) They tend to be complicated reads. You have to memorize a bunch of terms the author made up for their story. That's too much work, if you ask me.

Oumou speaks in a suggestive manner.

Oumou

Line 90) We should go for something simpler since we’re trying to get out of our reading slump.

Ambrož speaks in an indicative tone.

Ambrož

Line 91) What about romantic comedy?

Oumou speaks in a dispassionate manner.

Oumou

Line 92) Not my style. Everything just comes off as cringy.

Oumou gets hit with the realization of her finicky demeanor.

She speaks in an apologetic tone.

Oumou

Line 93) Sorry for being so picky. Were you digging the other genres?

Ambrož speaks in an authentically reassuring tone.

Ambrož

Line 94) Don’t worry. You’re making valid points.

He speaks in a revelatory manner.

Ambrož

Line 95) What about suspense romance?

Oumou speaks in a turned-off tone.

Oumou

Line 96) Too predictable.

Ambrož speaks in an inquisitive manner.

Ambrož

Line 97) What about mythological romance?

Oumou speaks in a tone of distaste.

Oumou

Line 98) Too incesty.

Ambrož speaks in a curious tone.

Ambrož

Line 99) Contemporary romance?

Oumou’s ears perk up in interest.

She speaks in an agreeable manner.

Oumou

Line 100) That sounds just right.

End of episode.
