Episode 10:

The day is October 16th, 2004. It’s a Saturday night.

Oumou’s face flushes red, hearing Ambrož’s slick tongue at work, saying that he doesn’t find her tardiness frustrating.

She speaks in a timid tone.

Oumou

Line 1) H-Haven’t I made a bad impression?

Ambrož speaks in a manner of consolation.

Ambrož

Line 2) Of course not. If anything, this impression is all the more memorable.

Ambrož gushes on the inside, feeling the butterflies in his stomach flutter.

Line 3) Ambrož’s inner thoughts: This impression honestly feels like the start of a romance movie.

Ambrož gets hit with a wave of realization based on Přemysl’s remark.

Line 4) Ambrož’s inner thoughts: I really am a hopeless romantic*, huh?

*Refer back to episode 8, line 92.

Oumou smiles at Ambrož’s friendly comfort.

Oumou

Line 5) Memorable in a good way, right?

Ambrož releases a cheerful chuckle.

Ambrož

Line 6) Of course. I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way.

Ambrož panics, feeling like he said something wrong.

He corrects himself in a nervous manner.

Ambrož

Line 7) I-I take that back. I’m sorry for the inconveniences you’ve had today. I wish you hadn’t had them.

Oumou bursts out in laughter, finding Ambrož’s reassurance amusing.

Oumou

Line 8) I got what you meant the first time around.

Ambrož nervously smiles at Oumou, feeling embarrassed.

He clears his throat, trying to change the topic of the conversation.

Ambrož

Line 9) Anyways, why don’t we reschedule our date since it’s getting pretty late and you’re drenched from the rain?

Oumou speaks in an appreciative tone.

Oumou

Line 10) That would be great.

Ambrož speaks in an inquisitive tone.

Ambrož

Line 11) Are you free tomorrow by any chance?

Oumou speaks in a lenient manner.

Oumou

Line 12) I owe you anyway. I’ll make time tomorrow.

Ambrož speaks in a manner of guilt.

Ambrož

Line 13) Don’t squeeze me in if you’re busy. I don’t want to be a burden.

Oumou speaks in a reassuring tone.

Oumou

Line 14) No, that’s alright. If anything, you’d be saving me some more time to relax.

Ambrož tilts his head in confusion.

Ambrož

Line 15) Is everything alright? You did mention having a tiring week*.

*Refer back to episode 9, line 90.

Oumou smiles, shaking her head no in disapproval of her attitude.

Oumou

Line 16) I should’ve elaborated, sounding so dramatic. I’ve just been moving into my apartment all week.

Ambrož speaks in a tone of excitement.

Ambrož

Line 17) You just moved?

Oumou

Line 18) Yeah. All the way from Washington D.C.

Ambrož speaks in a tone of enthusiasm.

Ambrož

Line 19) I just moved to Detroit recently too!

Oumou looks at Ambrož in shock.

Oumou

Line 20) What a coincidence! Where from?

Ambrož

Line 21) Wisconsin*.

*Refer back to episode 8, details in between lines 30 and 31.

Oumou speaks in a sympathetic manner.

Oumou

Line 22) It’s comforting to know I’m not the only new person here.

Ambrož speaks in a tone of charisma.

Ambrož

Line 23) We can get settled in together!

Oumou smiles at Ambrož happily.

Ambrož

Line 24) Has it been tough moving?

Oumou speaks in a manner of distress.

Oumou

Line 25) You bet. It’s mentally and physically draining.

Oumou speaks in a procrastinative tone.

Oumou

Line 26) I’ve spent the whole week unpacking and cleaning, and I still have so many more things left to do.

Oumou speaks in a lonesome tone.

Oumou

Line 27) And, although it was my personal decision to move, I can’t help but feel so alone.

Oumou

Line 28) All my friends and family are back in D.C.

Oumou speaks in a burnt out manner.

Oumou

Line 29) Being in a huge city with endless possibilities unfolding left and right makes me feel so overwhelmed. I just don’t know where to start or who to lean on.

Oumou

Line 30) It feels lonely not having anyone here. But it’s like that from the start. I know it’s a feeling that’ll take time to get used to.

Oumou

Line 31) Things in my life are getting very serious, and I’m ready for that. Which is why I want to find a romantic partner now that I’ve moved somewhere completely new.

Oumou

Line 32) I just hope that making this move was the right choice.

Oumou

Line 33) I’ve sacrificed so much. It just HAS to work.

Ambrož glances at Oumou in an admirable manner.

He speaks in an encouraging tone.

Ambrož

Line 34) It WILL work. I believe you!

Oumou smiles at Ambrož appreciatively.

She speaks in a manner of curiosity.

Oumou

Line 35) How are things for you, moving to Detroit after Wisconsin?

Ambrož

Line 36) Unlike you, I’ve only lived in Wisconsin for a couple of years, so I haven’t left much behind, making the move here.

Ambrož

Line 37) I’ve been moving around the country all my life, so I’m used to the feeling.

Ambrož

Line 38) But I totally get where you’re coming from. My first couple of moves were really hard.

Ambrož speaks in a manner of consolation.

Ambrož

Line 39) Take all the time you need to get situated. Time heals all.

Ambrož

Line 40) Which is why, since you seem so busy, don’t feel pressured to go on a date with me tomorrow. We can always reschedule another time.

Oumou speaks in a reassuring tone.

Oumou

Line 41) I told you it’s fine. I truly want to go on a date with you as soon as possible. Let me redeem myself.

Oumou blushes at Ambrož.

Oumou

Line 42) There’s just something so welcoming about you. I’d like to know more.

Ambrož glances at Oumou in a bittersweet manner.

Ambrož’s narration:

Line 43) There’s only so much I can tell you, though.

Line 44) I want to pursue this relationship, I really do…

Line 45) But, suddenly, I’m getting cold feet after encountering Oumou in real life.

Line 46) A couple hours ago, I didn’t think much of casually dating someone…

Line 47) But, now, I realize this is so much more than what meets the eye.

Line 48) Dabbling into something dishonest is a bad idea.

Line 49) I can’t put such a sweet soul’s heart in jeopardy, living a lie just to blend in with humans.

Line 50) If Oumou knew who I truly was, she’d bolt away from me as fast as she could.

Line 51) And I wouldn’t go out of my way to paint a fake life for her, spurting a bunch of nonsense to make it seem like I’m some normal person living this false identity as someone named Glyn*.

*Refer back to episode 9, line 28.

Line 52) Ever since I’ve become a vampire, I’ve made it my life’s mission to retain my moral values and ways of ethicality.

Line 53) If I date someone without them knowing who I truly am, that would hurt them.

Line 54) Vampires aren’t suited for dating.

Line 55) I can’t go into this without being human.

Line 56) It was easier when I was living a fake life as a worker undercover* because I wouldn’t get too close with people.

*Refer back to episode 8, line 8.

Line 57) But, being in a relationship will require that closeness; therefore, I can’t be in one as a vampire.

Line 58) As sick as I am of this isolated lifestyle, if I have to put someone’s feelings on the line to escape that which no longer serves me, it’s not worth it. The last thing I want to do is hurt someone. Therefore, Oumou deserves better.

Line 59) Přemysl knows what he’s talking about*. I shouldn’t dismiss his advice when he’s clearly more well aware of things than I am.

*Ambrož is referring to Přemysl advising them not to get close with humans (refer back to episode 8, line 9).

Line 60) Before I wipe her memory away with compulsion, there’s something I want to test.

Line 61) If I set my boundaries with her and she still accepts me, is there still a way we could make this work?

Line 62) I just feel so bad, dragging her all the way here in the rain along my uncertainty about this relationship.

Line 63) I can’t just reject her after all the effort we’ve put in to meet each other.

Line 64) She’s gone through so many hurdles today; imagine rejection on top of everything she’s already dealing with.

Ambrož speaks in an apprehensive manner.

Ambrož

Line 65) Sorry to get all serious abruptly, but there’s something you should know.

Oumou looks at Ambrož in concern.

Ambrož

Line 66) This is my first time dating someone, so I’m unfamiliar with a lot of things, which is why I apologize for not coordinating things in a convenient manner for you.

Ambrož

Line 67) I should’ve communicated this clearly beforehand, so that you could’ve made your mind up on whether or not you wanted to meet me.

Ambrož speaks in an anxious tone.

Ambrož

Line 68) And I know I’m reaching when I say this because we haven’t even started dating, but there are some things I won’t be able to open up to you about.

Ambrož

Line 69) You see. I have quite the complicated past, and as much as I know that people in relationships open up about all sorts of things, I truly can’t with you, no matter how close we get with each other.

Ambrož

Line 70) The complicated past that I’m withholding from you has a lot to do with my identity.

Ambrož

Line 71) So... please let me know if you still want to continue what we have even after what I’ve just said.

Ambrož glances at Oumou in apprehension, preparing himself for rejection.

Oumou’s eyebrows loosen in relief, worried that Ambrož was going to say something else.

She speaks in a reassuring tone.

Oumou

Line 72) Hey. I truly don’t mind.

Oumou

Line 73) There are most definitely unspoken words between people, no matter how close they are to each other.

Oumou

Line 74) There’s nothing wrong with withholding things you’re not comfortable letting me know about.

Oumou speaks in a cheerful tone, trying to lift Ambrož’s spirits.

Oumou

Line 75) In fact, you communicating that to me and being honest is considerate.

Oumou

Line 76) I appreciate you thinking about me. But I want you to know that it’s okay.

Oumou

Line 77) We all have our boundaries. And they deserve to be respected.

Oumou

Line 78) They shouldn’t hold you back from the potential things you can establish with a person.

Oumou speaks in a playful manner.

Oumou

Line 79) Not unless you’re some sort of serial killer.

Ambrož nervously laughs.

Oumou glances at Ambrož in a friendly manner.

Oumou

Line 80) So, what do you say? Do you still want to give this a go?

Ambrož observes Oumou, his eyes showcasing sentimentality.

Line 81) Ambrož’s inner thoughts: The heart wants what it wants.

Line 82) Ambrož’s inner thoughts: I can’t call it quits here when she’s eagerly wanting to get into this just as much as I do.

Ambrož happily smiles at Oumou, speaking in a cheerful tone.

Ambrož

Line 83) Of course!

Oumou lets out a sigh of relief.

Oumou

Line 84) So are we still on for the date tomorrow?

Ambrož speaks in a cheerful manner.

Ambrož

Line 85) Let’s do it!

Ambrož speaks in a suggestive manner.

Ambrož

Line 86) I have an idea, though.

Ambrož

Line 87) Since you have things to do at home, why don’t I help you?

Oumou tilts her head to the side in confusion.

She speaks in a puzzling tone.

Oumou

Line 88) I don’t think I follow.

Ambrož speaks in a curious manner.

Ambrož

Line 89) What do you have left to do at home?

Oumou

Line 90) A lot of things. I need to unpack a bunch of clothes, and I bought some furniture that I’d like to get assembled as soon as possible.

Ambrož speaks in a tone of excitement.

Ambrož

Line 91) I’m great at assembling furniture! Why don’t I help you out?

Oumou

Line 92) Is that supposed to be our date?

Ambrož

Line 93) We can grab a bite after finishing everything! How does that sound?

Oumou speaks in a hesitant manner.

Oumou

Line 94) I don’t know. I wouldn’t want to be a nuisance involving you in my responsibilities.

Ambrož speaks in a reassuring tone.

Ambrož

Line 95) Nonsense! I just want to make myself useful.

Ambrož speaks in an encouraging manner.

Ambrož

Line 96) Teamwork makes the dreamwork~

Ambrož

Line 97) Let me provide you some company tomorrow as we get productive.

Oumou glances at Ambrož in a grateful manner.

Oumou

Line 98) Sounds like a plan! I could really use the help.

Ambrož speaks in a tone of relief.

Ambrož

Line 99) Yay! Just text me the deets and I’ll be over in a heartbeat.

Ambrož drives Oumou home, with them arriving at her apartment complex entrance gate.

Ambrož

Line 100) We’re here, Oumou!

Oumou speaks in an appreciative manner.

Oumou

Line 101) I can’t thank you enough for driving me home today, Glyn. It means a lot. Thank you very much!

Ambrož speaks in a coy tone.

Ambrož

Line 102) It’s no biggie. I’m glad I could be of help to you.

Oumou gets out of the car, getting hit with the realization that she’s still wearing Ambrož’s coat (he lent it to her when they first met. Refer back to episode 9, details in between lines 80 and 81).

Oumou

Line 103) Oh. Let me quickly take this off.

Oumou starts to take the coat off, but Ambrož stops her.

He speaks in a protective manner.

Ambrož

Line 104) Don’t worry about that. Keep it on. You’re still wet from the rain.

Oumou speaks in a worrisome tone.

Oumou

Line 105) Are you sure? This coat must’ve cost a fortune. Let me give it back to you.

Ambrož speaks in an insistent manner.

Ambrož

Line 106) Please. Keep it on. If you take it off now, you could catch a cold.

Oumou speaks in a playful manner, finding Ambrož’s persistence cute.

Oumou

Line 107) I’m a couple steps away from my place. I don’t think I’ll catch a cold like that. Especially since I ran around in the rain earlier in the day*, trying to find a taxi.

*Refer back to episode 9, line 93.

Ambrož

Line 108) That’s a good point. But you can never be too safe. Besides, it looks good on you.

Oumou blushes, feeling flustered by Ambrož’s remark.

Oumou

Line 109) Fine. You win.

Ambrož smiles in satisfaction.

He speaks in an affectionate manner.

Ambrož

Line 110) Alright, then. Have a good night.

Ambrož

Line 111) I suggest you brew up a hot cup of tea before bed and take a warm bath. I feel like you most definitely caught a cold today.

Oumou speaks in a reassuring tone.

Oumou

Line 112) Consider it done. Have a good night, Glyn. Thank you for everything.

Ambrož and Oumou bid each other goodbye, and he drives himself home, feeling fulfilled by their successful date.

Line 113) Ambrož’s inner thoughts: I was so crushed earlier in the day, thinking that Oumou stood me up.

Line 114) Ambrož’s inner thoughts: I’m glad that things are looking up for us. I’m going to give this relationship my all.

End of Episode.
