Luckily, the butcher who murdered my family ended up dying from my brother’s affliction*. *Refer back to episode 5, line 103. Přemysl Line 9) I fled town immediately, knowing that it wasn’t safe for me to reside there, especially since I had become a vampire. Přemysl speaks in a manner of devastation. Přemysl Line 10) The tragedy that occurred to them still hurts my heart every day. Přemysl Line 11) It was utterly impossible to continue going about life on my own after I lost them. Přemysl Line 12) I was completely alone, isolated, and ostracized from the rest of the world. Přemysl Line 13) But there was still hope left within me, buried deeply within my body, firmly believing that I’d eventually stumble into someone who accepts me as I am with open arms. Přemysl Line 14) Because of that, I continued persisting with life, knowing that I’m existing to honor my family. Přemysl Line 15) I’m living for them, so I can’t leave Bohemia*, Ambrož. *Refer back to episode 5, line 45. Přemysl Line 16) But I’m happy for you that you’re flipping your life around. Přemysl Line 17) I’m sorry that I can’t keep my promise of being there for you*. *Refer back to episode 4, line 50. Přemysl Line 18) What matters is that you have your family by your side. Ambrož clasps Přemysl's hands gently, gazing at him consolingly. He speaks in a manner of sadness. Ambrož Line 21) Přem, you have no idea how sorry I am for what happened with your family. I offer you my sincere condolences. Ambrož Line 22) You are so resilient, continuing to hold onto that bubbly personality of yours after all you went through. Ambrož speaks in a sentimental tone. Ambrož Line 23) I won’t force you to come with my family and me to America, but after hearing your full story, I still believe that you should come. Ambrož Line 24) You’re not abandoning your family, fleeing Bohemia… Ambrož Line 25) On the contrary, as you said, you’re living for your family; therefore, live for your family to its fullest. Ambrož Line 26) Don’t keep yourself contained here. You have all the time in the world in the palm of your hands. Ambrož Line 27) You deserve to start anew, so don’t restrain yourself. Ambrož Line 28) Your family would’ve wanted you to continue flourishing into the person that you are and will further blossom into. Ambrož places his hand on Přemysl’s shoulder consolingly. Ambrož Line 29) That’s why your brother saved you, Přem. Ambrož speaks in an understanding manner. Ambrož Line 30) Becoming a vampire came into my life at an inconvenient time. Ambrož Line 31) After all, my parents and I had just made plans to move to America sometime soon, so I was looking forward to living a better life there. Ambrož Line 32) Although, this unfortunate circumstance has befallen me, as you said, it is what it is*. *Refer back to episode 4, line 43. Ambrož Line 33) I’ve already shed enough tears from spilled milk. It’s time to pick up a rag and clean up my mess. Ambrož Line 34) Sure, I’ll have to adapt to certain limitations that this condition has put me in, but I’m not letting it get in the way of my plans to continue living my life. Ambrož Line 35) Just because I’m technically dead, doesn’t mean I’m going to stop living my life. Ambrož speaks in a tone of apprehension. Ambrož Line 36) Sorry to put this bluntly, but there’s nothing left for you here, Přem. Ambrož Line 37) But you can start things over with me and my family by your side. Ambrož Line 38) It’s up to you to make your decision. Don’t think that I’m trying to persuade you. Ambrož Line 39) I just want you to do what’s best. Ambrož speaks in an appreciative manner. Ambrož Line 40) Although, I’ve only known you for less than 2 days, the connection we’ve established thus far has been unlike any other. Ambrož Line 41) I would say that our bond has become deeply rooted quickly. Přemysl speaks in an assertive manner. Přemysl Line 42) I’ll go. Ambrož speaks in a tone of surprise. Ambrož Line 43) A-Are you sure? Přemysl nods his head in assurance. Přemysl Line 44) You’re right. Staying here is only keeping me stagnant*. *Refer back to episode 5, line 50. Přemysl speaks in a hopeful manner. Přemysl Line 45) I should seize the opportunity of leaving if it’s given to me like this. Přemysl Line 46) I wasn’t able to make things right with my family… Přemysl Line 47) But… I’m hoping I’ll be able to make things right with you. Přemysl glances at Ambrož sentimentally. Přemysl Line 48) I’m given this second chance to redeem myself. Might as well take the leap of faith, right? Ambrož offers Přemysl a bittersweet smile. Ambrož Line 49) We could always visit again when things get better here in Bohemia. It’s not like our kingdom will grow legs and run away from us, right? Přemysl chuckles, nodding his head in agreement. Ambrož glances at Přemysl in a hopeful manner. Ambrož’s narration: Line 50) After a couple of days of wrapping things up, we finally started our move to America with Přemysl tagging along with us. Line 51) Fortunately, Mom and Dad warmly welcomed Přemysl into our voyage. Line 52) Our journey would start out with traveling to Prussia on a train, then boarding the trans-Atlantic steamship sailing to New York, America. Line 53) Then, we would take a train from New York to Omaha, Nebraska*. *Refer back to episode 1, line 87. Line 54) It took us around 2 weeks to successfully move. Line 55) When we moved, our family found agricultural jobs sustained by Nebraska’s rich farmland. Line 56) The pay wasn’t necessarily ideal, but the work was much more manageable than working in Mill factories. Line 57) Přemysl and I would work at night together since we couldn’t be out in the sun. Line 58) Work didn’t feel as exhausting for me. There was so much energy bustling inside of me that was begging to be exerted. Line 59) Přemysl says it’s because vampires are agile. Line 60) With a bit of compulsion* used here and there, all of us were able to live comfortably as a family together. *Refer back to episode 3, line 74. Line 61) We never used compulsion to hurt others or wreak havoc. Line 62) We always simply used it to help us. Line 63) Though, some may think, using such a capability is considered unethical, we did what we had to do to live at ease. Line 64) We suffered enough and deserved better. Who wouldn’t take advantage of such an ability if they possessed it? Line 65) We picked up English in America to communicate with people*. *Refer back to episode 1, line 97. Line 66) Přemysl and I weren’t necessarily able to go back to school* due to being vampires, but in our free time, we would read various books together, educating ourselves on our own. *Refer back to episode 1, line 96. Line 67) Adapting to life as a vampire was very challenging. Line 68) Luckily, I had Přemysl by my side, helping me along the way. Line 69) I’ve learned a plethora of things about vampirism from him. Line 70) Silver, sunlight, Holy water, and garlic, are our weaknesses. Line 71) The only way we can truly die is by a stake through the heart, decapitation, or being lit on fire. Line 72) However, some of our perks include our superhuman strength, speed, and power to compel. Přemysl and I have concluded that immortality is not a perk. Line 73) Some other facts include that we don’t have to eat regularly, we don’t get dirty like humans do, we don’t expel bodily waste nor can our body produce it, we can’t bear children, our organs don’t work, and our senses are heightened. Line 74) I’ve been getting used to my blood only diet. Relying on animals gets easier day by day. Line 75) The biggest relief that my transformation as a vampire has is that I’m not a danger to humans. Line 76) I thought like most tales about vampires, I’d feel the urge to use a human to fulfill my blood thirst. Line 77) But since I’ve been solely relying on animals to satiate my hunger, I don’t feel my impulses kick in for humans. Line 78) Being a vampire is not easy, and I was frustrated from the start based on how many limitations a condition like this comes with… Line 79) But things are easier to handle day by day. Line 80) The great thing is that I have my family by my side, supporting me on this journey. Line 81) Přemysl and I have become great friends over the years. Line 82) I consider him like my younger brother, I’ve always wanted one, being left as an only child due to my parents’ infertility*. *Refer back to episode 1, line 13. Line 83) Přemysl and I lived under wraps, so nobody knew about our true identity nor questioned why after many years we continued looking the same, while everybody else aged. Line 84) It was nice being separated from the rest of society, living in peace with no one else besides my family. Line 85) That’s all I wanted for so long, and I was immensely gratified that although there were tweaks to our plans, things fell in place eventually. Line 86) As mom always wanted, we would have feasts on holidays*, enjoying our time all together. *Refer back to episode 1, line 63. Line 87) The biggest benefit that becoming a vampire has bestowed upon us, is that I’m able to give back to my family. Line 88) All my life, I watched as Mom and Dad made endless sacrifices just to sustain our family. Line 89) Having the privilege to finally take off various burdens weighing on their shoulders, made me extremely fulfilled. Line 90) As Přemysl and I navigated through our lives as vampires, we figured out how to conquer the sun. Line 91) It started out by accident, with us unexpectedly getting exposed to sunlight. Line 92) As the sun scorched our skin, something we realized was that the more we exposed ourselves to the sun, our body adapted to its beams. Similar to how a person with an allergy consumes small portions of their allergy, helping their body become immune to it. Line 93) It took several years, but as we slowly exposed ourselves to the sun each and everyday, taking baby steps, we finally were able to fully go into the sun, without any repercussions. Line 94) The process was lengthy and extremely painful, but the both of us missed the warmth of the sun immensely and took whatever desperate measures we possibly could. Line 95) We were finally able to conquer our biggest limitation, with countless doors of opportunities opening for us. Line 96) The both of us were eventually able to finish a proper education, and helped out along with our family with work. Line 97) This mundane lifestyle encompassed and symbolized tremendous steps we took in our lives. Line 98) However, the biggest hindrance vampirism caused in our lives was immortality. Line 99) Though, from a bird's eye view, immortality seems great… Line 100) It’s not great at all when your loved ones start to age, becoming frailer and frailer every second of the day.
