Episode 16:

After getting a successful meeting set up with Marvins friend Russell. Marvin and Calista plan what they want to say to him when Calista meets up with Russell.

Marvin writes out what Calista should say on a piece of paper.

Paper reads:

  1. How did Elouise and Marvin get married?

  2. Ask about Marvins life after he divorced Elouise.

  3. Where did he live?

  4. Did he remarry?

  5. Did he try or keep in touch with his family even though they got cut-off?

  6. How did he die?

Calista reads the paper.

Marvin

Line 1) We need to know as much about my life as possible. I’m sure I stayed close with my friends after my divorce, so, Russell should know a lot about me.

Calista

Line 2) Back then, was it normal to propose out of the blue?

Marvin

Line 3) Absolutely not. Which is why I don’t understand why Elouise and I ended up getting married.

Calista

Line 4) Yeah. Hopefully he’ll be able to answer our questions.

Calista looks at the time and notices that it is 1:00 PM.

Calista

Line 5) In the meantime, do you want me to teach you how to use modern technology?

1 hour and 30 minutes go by, and Calista is showing Marvin how to use her computer.

Calista

Line 6) After searching something up, you can clean your browsing data, so that the computer has a clear history.

Calista

Line 7) This comes in handy if you use passwords, so that whoever else uses your device won’t be able to get that information. It also helps with the browsing storage, thus, helps your computer work faster.

Marvin

Line 8) That’s so advanced.

Calista

Line 9) I think you’re getting the hang of it.

A pop up ad comes on and Marvin doesn’t know what to do, and Calista puts her hand on the mouse pad, touching Marvins hand in the process.

Calista

Line 10) These pop up ads are so annoying.

She exits out of them then removes her hand. Marvin notices the time.

Marvin

Line 11) How far away is the destination to see Russell?

Calista

Line 12) Around 10 minutes.

Marvin

Line 13) You should get going. It’s better to go early just in case you arrive late.

Calista

Line 14) Why don’t you come with me?

Marvin

Line 15) What?

Calista

Line 16) You can monitor the meeting, and I’ll hook you through my laptop so you can hear everything.

Marvin

Line 17) Don’t you think that’s too risky? What if he sees me?

Calista

Line 18) I’ll make sure he won’t. But it was just a suggestion. You can stay home if you’d like.

Marvin

Line 19) You make the call. Do you want me to come?

Line 20) Calista: I’m asking him to come because I’d be more secure knowing that he’s keeping track of our conversation. Especially since this is a friend of his.

Calista

Line 21) I think I’d be helpful. And also since I don’t know what he looks like you’ll be able to spot him out for me.

Marvin

Line 22) Alright. Then I’ll come.

Calista

Line 23) Let me get you some stuff to slightly disguise yourself.

Calista gets him a mask, shades, and beanie.

Calista

Line 24) You should wear these when we go.

Marvin looks at the objects in a confused expression. Calista notices.

Calista

Line 25) Oh. Is it too much? You know what. Just stay home. I think I’m dragging you along anyway.

Marvin

Line 26) No, no. I want to go. It’s just… Don’t you think this stuff would make me look even more sketchy?

Calista

Line 27) Oh. No. This stuff is actually normal to wear nowadays.

Calista

Line 28) When we get home. I can give you a crash course so that you can be up to date from our timeline.

Marvin smiled.

They are on the metro, waiting until they are at their destination.

Calista is holding her bag which contains her laptop and headphones.

They converse on the bus and set up their gear. Marvin isn’t wearing his disguise yet.

Calista

Line 29) Alright, so you’ll be taking my bag. When we get to the park, hide behind a tree and call me through my laptop. Use my headphones so the sound won’t leak, and you’ll be able to hear everything precisely.

Marvin

Line 30) How will you make sure I hear?

Calista

Line 31) My phone will be on speaker, and I’ll put it in my back pocket facing up so that the audio doesn’t get muffled.

Calista

Line 32) Gosh, I completely forgot to show you how to mute a call.

Marvin

Line 33) You can do that?

Calista

Line 34) Yeah. Here I’ll show you real quick.

Calista opens her bag. And pulls out her laptop. She hands her phone to Marvin

Calista

Line 35) Please hold my phone.

Marvin accepts, and while Calista gives Marvin her phone that bus makes a huge spot causing her to smush into Marvins chest and have his back against the bus wall. Calista pulls back.

Calista

Line 36) Oh. I’m so sorry. Is your back okay?

Marvin

Line 37) Yeah. It’s fine. Are you okay?

They blush at each other a bit.

Calista

Line 38) I’m all good.

Calista

Line 39) Anyways, give my computer a call.

Marvin does just that. Calista accepts his call and shows her computer to Marvin.

Calista

Line 40) You just click this button and it’ll mute your call from mine.

Calista

Line 41) This will make sure that your part of the call won’t transfer to mine, so that your friend doesn’t hear any noises coming from my phone.

Marvin laughs a bit.

Calista

Line 42) Are you all good?

Marvin

Line 43) This is so sneaky. I feel like a spy.

Calista

Line 44) I'll admit that it’s sneaky. But it’s for a good cause, so we’re fine.

They smile at each other.

The bus comes to a stop and they sneak behind a post, while Marvin wears his disguise.

Calista

Line 45) I just told him I arrived. He said he’ll be here any minute now.

Calista

Line 46) Try to be on the lookout.

Line 47) Marvin: This will be a bit tricky.

Line 48) Marvin: Will I be able to recognize my friend, but the older version of them?

Calista gets a ding on her phone.

Calista

Line 49) He said he’s here and that he’s sitting on a bench.

Marvin looks for him by the park. He looks for the benches and sees people that don’t match. He finally spots a guy on his own but his face is turned.

Line 50) Marvin: Is that him? He needs to turn his head, so that I can confirm.

The man turns his head, and it is indeed Marvins friend Russell Jimenez. Marvin is shocked, but relieved to see his friend.

Marvin

Line 51) Oh my Gosh.

Calista turns her attention to Marvin.

Calista

Line 52) Do you see him?

Marvin

Line 53) T-That’s definitely him.

He turns to Calista all happily.

Marvin

Line 54) The resemblance is there.

Calista

Line 55) Alright, you go the opposite direction from me, and find a place to hide and listen. I’ll go approach him.

Calista quickly texts Talulla the entire situation so that she knows why they’re out of the house.

After that she slides her phone into her pocket, making sure the speaker is up so that the audio doesn’t get muffled.

Calista makes her way to the bench where Russell Jimenez sits. She smiles and warmly greets him.

Calista

Line 56) Excuse me sir. Are you Russel Jimenez by any chance?

Russell

Line 57) Hello. Yes I am.

Russell

Line 58) Calista Turner, right?

Russell extends his arm to shake Calista’s hand. She shakes it in return.

Calista

Line 59) Yes, sir.

Shot pans to Marvin listening in.

Line 60) Marvin: I can’t believe it’s actually him.

Calista

Line 61) I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you taking time out of your day to talk to me. It means a lot.

Russell

Line 62) I’m glad it’s helpful to you.

Russell

Line 63) Say, how did you get my number?

Line 64) Calista: I had a feeling he’d ask me that. Luckily I came prepared.

Calista

Line 65) As you know, my grandma doesn’t really like talking about her past relations. So, I looked through her things and found her phone book.

Calista

Line 66) It was a pretty old phone book, so I assumed that it had to have a connection with people she knew when she was younger.

Calista

Line 67) From there I called all her saved numbers and you were the only person who picked up and said that I didn’t have the wrong number.

Russell

Line 68) Oh, I see.

Shot pans to Marvin.

Line 69) Marvin: Calista is so clever for that. I owe her big.

Calista

Line 70) Just to ask. If everyone else said I had the wrong number. Does that mean that they’ve passed away?

Line 71) Calista: Hopefully this question helps clarify any confusion Marvin might have.

Russell

Line 72) Well, I’m not sure what numbers your grandma has saved. But if she has mine, I’m assuming she has my whole friend group’s numbers as well.

Russell

Line 73) Out of my whole friend group. My friend Jax, and your grandma’s brother, Todd, are the only ones who have passed away.

Russell

Line 74) I don’t know about everyone else though.

Calista

Line 75) Oh. I see.

Shot pans to Marvin a bit devastated.

Russell

Line 76) Say. Your last name is Turner. Are you married? Is that why your last name changed from Douglas to Turner?

Calista

Line 77) Y-Yeah, that’s all correct.

Line 78) Calista: I didn’t think of that. I can’t slip up like that again.

Calista

Line 79) Sorry. I should have used my former last name when I called you to clear up the confusion.

Russell

Line 80) That’s alright.

Calista

Line 81) Is it okay for me to dive in and ask questions now?

Russell

Line 82) Elouise has only one granddaughter.

Calista

Line 83) I-I’m sorry?

Russell

Line 84) She has one granddaughter, and her name is Teresa.

Russell

Line 85) If your grandmother has my number then she must have my friend Cady’s number too.

Russell

Line 86) She would’ve picked up if you called her. I’m not sure why you’re saying that when you called she said she had the wrong number.

Russell mumbles the next line.

Russell

Line 87) Unless you called her old number, but how would you have gotten that?

Calista is stunned and doesn't know what to say.

Line 88) Calista: Crap! We’re busted. What was I thinking going for a stretch like this?

Shot pans to Marvin and he also looks stunned.

Line 89) Marvin: Hopefully Calista can find an excuse to cover up the situation.

Russell

Line 90) On top of that. Teresa’s mixed. Her mother is African.

Russell

Line 91) Which means you would look half African, but you don’t.

Calista

Line 92) S-So here’s the thing. Teresa is actually a close friend of mine. She wanted to find out more about her cut-off family and asked me if I could do that for her.

Russell

Line 93) Is that right?

Calista

Line 94) Yes.

Russell

Line 95) I’m not buying that. Why would you come here and pretend to be Elouise’s granddaughter, when Teresa could’ve easily talked to me about it, without this whole charade?

Line 96) Calista: Crap! Crap! Crap! Why did I say that?

Calista

Line 97) She urgently wanted me to do this for her. She didn’t give me much clarification about how I should approach meeting you, so I just said that I was her grandma’s granddaughter, and hoped that would work.

Calista

Line 98) I’m sorry for pretending to be someone I’m not. She just told me that I really needed to do this, without providing me much information about you. So, I just assumed you didn’t know much about her.

Russell

Line 99) If I got in touch with her. She would be able to confirm that, right?

Line 100) Calista: That would blow my cover. What should I do?

Russell

Line 101) You look uncertain. But don’t worry I won’t be doing that.

Russell

Line 102) But, explain to me who you really are, how you found my number, and why you want to know about Marvin Douglas?

Marvin is listening from his spot.

Calista

Line 103) S-So, the thing is. I’m actually his granddaughter, but I’m not related through Elouise. Marvin had a daughter with my grandma, Sarah and his daughter Lisa married my father John and gave birth to me. However, we had-

Russell laughs.

Russell

Line 104) None of that is true. I was close with Marvin after he got the divorce and he never remarried.

Russell

Line 105) I’ll ask you again. Who are you?

Calista sat in shock not knowing what to do.

Russell

Line 106) Did you think you could fool me just because I’m old?

Marvin walks up in disguise to them.

Line 107) Calista: What does he think he’s doing?

Russell

Line 108) Hello sir. Do you need something?

Calista

Line 109) Oh. Don’t mind my friend Jimmy. He must’ve wanted to say hi since he recognized me at this park.

Calista mouths and points for Marvin to leave.

Marvin

Line 110) It’s okay Calista. He’s already caught us.

Marvin starts taking his disguise off.

Russell

Line 111) What’s going on here?

Calista

Line 112) J-Jimmy don’t-

But it was too late Marvin already took off his disguise showing himself to Russell.

Russell forms a shocked expression on his face.
