The Hypocrisy of the UnjustA Story by Shepard RhodesWe preach everyone should be satisfied with who they are and we should be proud of our abilities, but teach that you need to be perfectly fit, or you get a failing grade on your record. Hypocritical? Many people believe that Physical Education is the estimation of a student’s physical abilities. I believe it’s a chance to be more active during school. I believe it’s nothing more than a chance to be physical and learn how to improve your health with physical exercise. To judge and grade based on someone’s physical capabilities is completely contradictory to that. It’s not a class meant for judging on physique. It’s a class meant for judging on participation. If someone just doesn’t try, they shouldn’t be credited with passing the class. If someone can’t do 40 leg lifts in 60 seconds, but they try every day and work to the goal with all their heart but get passed by someone who didn’t even practice once on their own, it’s unfair and unjust. Physical Education should not be held at the same standard as Mental Education. Most careers and colleges look far more at someone’s intelligence, rather than their physique. Some people are far more gifted athletically than others. For someone to get all 6s in every class, but fail gym, even though they “studied”, isn’t right. It’s true that people who study for a test can improve far faster and far more efficiently than someone who practices and works out for gym and attempts to pass a physical test. Also, to grade on winning or losing a game is absurd and completely and totally immoral and outrageous. It should be based on participation. You can try your heart out, but if you lose a game, you lose a game. SOMEONE WILL LOSE. That means someone will always lose points. Making it impossible to get a 6 (100%) unless you win EVERY GAME. The “motivation” argument is easily passed. You should look at the ones who aren’t trying. The ones who don’t play and don’t participate should be deducted points. THAT is the motivation that is fair and justified. NOTHING JUSTIFIES GRADING BASED ON WINNING OR LOSING A GAME. To say that “winning is everything” is a self-centered, arrogant comment that proves that we live in a greedy, athletic-obsessed society. I believe this is an issue in
modern society and one of the MANY flaws in our educational system. We glorify
athletics far more than we need to. I understand that we have a problem with
obesity, but academics are still important and we can’t just make a society
based around grading someone on their physical abilities. I believe it does
nothing to improve anything. PE IS A PARTICIPATION CLASS ONLY, NOT A CLASS HELD
AT THE SAME LEVEL AS ACADEMIC CLASSES. © 2012 Shepard RhodesAuthor's Note
