Don't Cry

Don't Cry

A Poem by Yemariam Markos

This poem is about social anxiety. I understand the outcome in the poem isn't always the same for everybody, but I'm basing the poem off of my own experience. Hope you like :)

I want to be free

From this world of dishonesty and mistrust

I want to be free

Of this constant pain I feel whenever I look at them

You snake- always having high standards that I'm somehow lower than

Everywhere I turn that evil hand slowly closes around my throat claustrophobia taking over all initial fears

Don't you cry, don't you cry, don't you dare cry

They're laughing, they're taunting they're talking about me

They hate me, they want me gone

I'm not good enough and I'll never be

Don't you cry, don't you cry, don't you dare cry

Something's wrong, I can't pinpoint it

Everything I touch turns to dust

Everything I care for slips from my grasp

No one I love treats me the way they used to

Don't you cry, don't you cry, don't you dare cry

They're watching you they see through you like an open book

You have to be perfect for them to stop, for them to care

Don't you cry, don't you cry, don't you dare cry

The voices in my head they just won't stop

You're ugly, you're worthless, and you’ll never make it!

Stop! Please, let me breathe!

Don't you cry, don't you cry, don't you dare cry

They keep watching me, oh dear God, they're smiling

I have to hide; I have to run before they approach

They won't like me, no one does

It's too late, they're going to tease, they already hate me

They’ve stopped in front of me

Here it comes; they’re going to humiliate me

But the first thing I hear is:

“Hello”
