Close Your Eyes: Get Some RestA Story by Helena G.Close Your Eyes are short stories that have a different story each time. For my first one, this story is about a husband visiting his sick wife in the hospital. Hope you enjoy my first short story. :)The hospital seemed so deserted and quiet. I guess that means it was a good day. This hospital was nice and it had nice staff but it did have its cases where it could not heal everyone. “Patient?” I slowly came back to reality as I heard the voice. “I’m sorry what?” I asked in confusion. “Patient? Sir, Are you here for a patient?” asked the receptionist from behind the counter. “Oh, I’m here for Katherine Richards.” I told her. Just saying her name made me feel brighter. “Relation?” She asked. In my head, I wondered why did that matter but I guess it was useful for security measures. “I’m her husband, Daniel Richards.” “Alright, if you could just sign in here and put this visitors tag on.” the receptionist said. I could tell that she was more impatient than me. I am pretty sure she hated her job. “Ms. Katherine Richards is in room 342 on the third floor.” “Ok thank you.” I answered. As I began walking towards the elevator, the receptionist began to say “Not to be rude or anything but could I ask you why you didn’t know her room sooner? I mean I would think you already would since you are her husband.” “I just got back from a business trip. As soon as I got the call that she was in the hospital, I booked a ticket home and got here as soon as I could.” The receptionist looked at me with satisfaction since it felt like she knew I was telling the truth. “Well I hope your wife feels better, sir” she said with a warm smile. “So do I, ma’am.” As I turned and went onto the elevator, all I could think of was how my wife might not make it. She was in the final stage of her lung cancer. As I got to her room, there she was. There was the women I fell in love with. “Hey Stud.” she said in a raspy voice. “Hey Kitty Kat.” Seeing her hooked up to all the hospital gadgets made me realize that she is almost gone, that she is fading. “I knew I shouldn’t have gone on that business trip.” A wave of guilt that was following me finally overflowed me. “No, no honey. It is not your fault. Remember I was the one who forced you to go on this trip.” She said as I was on my knees, holding her hand, next to her bed. “I’m so sorry. If I never went on the trip, I would have been here for you.” She pulled my hand to her cheek and said “Honey, I told you to go on the trip. I still love you no matter what so it is fine. Besides this does not hurt that bad. The doctors gave me painkillers and I just feel tired.” “Then get some sleep honey. You need all the rest you can get.” “Alright honey, maybe when I am sleeping I will get rid of some pain.” She had a warm smile on her face. “Good, just close your eyes. I love you.” I held her hand tight as she closed her eyes. “I love you too.” She kept holding my hand tight as her body became relaxed. When she had her grip let go and the flat line was heard from the monitor. © 2016 Helena G.Author's Note
