No Regrets

No Regrets

A Poem by Jackson Yang

No Regrets

We start simply by saying what no one could understand
This feeling of love and strength that we have as we grow
The true bond of friendship that makes all others seem obsolete
From the first day to our very last
Many of you will not understand till I finally have to say
She is the reasons why my heart still beats this day

From day one when I first laid my eyes on her
There was nothing that seemed to stand out as I looked from the corner of my eye
Someone who was about average height at best
A little skinny by even the standards of my own
The same typical long hair that every other girl seems to have
Yet that day something just drew me in that would never let go

I looked back at the image that lay in my mind
Someone so ordinary yet somehow I just couldn’t let go
All the thoughts of her face shown as bright as day
I made the decision later that day
To find a way to approach that girl if it’s the last thing I did that day

To the first conversation we had face to face
Using the computer as our way to keep in touch
Never crossing the lines that were drawn from the start
Holding back any emotions as time was not on our side
Waiting to finally acknowledge that a meeting must be set

As the nervous tensions crept by my side
Waiting by the bench as the sun stood frozen in time
From the left or the right, I stared forever each way
Waiting as the light cleared the way
Finally seeing that girl I still did not know

Onto the first “date” that we set up months ago
So afraid we both were of meeting up for the first time
Not as friends, but neither as something more
Just meeting up to see how we both would do
Waiting to see who would falter in their first steps

Out for drinks and a little lunch
Yes it was “lunch” which everyone knows meant as friends
But it did not deter the efforts that I would put forth
To gain your trust, to finally open you up
That was the test that she put forth
Would I succeed or fail as miserable as before

To the real first date that only trust could build
Dinner and a movie, finally a step towards something new
A chance to finally prove that we could be so much more
Was this the calling that fate had in store
To finally be able to see us become something more

We sat, we talked
We laughed, we even cried
What was so different was we could finally let go
Be ourselves and not worry about when the other had to go
The start of what should have become something more

Until the day we had nothing left to say
All the dates where we shared all that we had
Never holding back cause we thought this was the one
Only to see us fall a part
The very first “love” that I ever did have
Did not last as long as I wished it had

But to our surprise we did not have any lingering thoughts
Forgetting about the drama that did unfold
Letting go of a past to start something new
Even as friends we did not see that as a step back
This was again the start of what we needed to get through

Although they may never understand the story that played out
Even will all the fights and the “I Hate You”
We became something that we both did need to grow
The trust we built that only lovers could share
Carried on even as the relationship did die

Is that not something that makes it worth all the pain of goodbye?
Still being together even when “love” decides to die

Wow this was a very poweful piece. Very heartwrenching and pulls at the emotions. I like the flow of this and the sadness you brought into this. Excellent job.
