Chapter 1

Chapter 1

A Chapter by Stacey

"You are the biggest fraidy cat ever." My best friend, Arielle said, laughing as we drove along a narrow bridge.
"Have you heard about the stories on this bridge? Gangs come out at this time of night and trap us on either end. We are going to die!" I said, grabbing her shirt.
"Oh, relax," I saw the end of the bridge coming up. "Look, we're almost off the bridge." Once we were away from the harsh rush of the waterfall, I breathed.
"You are such a daredevil. It's insane." I pulled my legs up on the seat to comfort myself.
"No! I'm just not a p***y like you." Arielle smirked. I couldn't see much in the dark but her white teeth shone.
"Excuse me?! I am not!"
"Please, you can't even talk to Adam without doing something embarrassing. Like today, when you spat as you were talking. Or yesterday, when you snorted during your fake laugh."
I punched her arm. "Why the hell do you have to bring that up? It's so embarrassing."
She laughed. "Man up, Sierra. Adam is normal like everyone else. I should know. I was best friends with him in first grade."
I sighed and just looked out my window until we got to Arielle's house. We walked up to her front door and when I didn't say anything, she stopped me from going inside.
"Hey, Sierra. I'm sorry. I just love teasing you." Arielle smiled at me.
I slightly smiled back. "I'm just tired of you always mentioning Adam."
Arielle looked down and smiled. "Sorry." We went inside and up to her room. I finally got to take off my jeans and change into pajamas. I plopped onto Arielle's bed and hugged her pillow.
Arielle sat down beside me. "What do you think you would do if someday, everyone was obliterated from the town?" Arielle randomly asked.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"Well, let's say you wake up in the morning and get ready for school but you walk outside and realize that everyone is gone." Arielle grabbed a small notepad from her back pocket.
I eyed her suspiciously. "I would probably go insane."
Arielle smiled as she scribbled down a few notes. "I want to be the last person in this town. I think it would be amazing. I'm so sick of everyone. I just want it to be a peaceful town that no one knows about so I wouldn't have to worry about anything or anyone. Just myself."
I nodded. "Okay, Arielle. Sure." I closed my eyes and eventually dozed off.
I woke up and Arielle wasn't in the room. I checked my phone for the time. It was almost three in the morning. I got up and opened her bedroom door. The hallway was dark but there was a light on downstairs. I walked down the steps but stopped at the sound of voices.
"Arielle, you can't keep doing this to her." The first familiar voice said.
"Hey. I can do whatever the hell I want, mister." That was definitely Arielle.
"Do you understand that you are crushing her heart by doing this to her?! She's your best friend."
I heard a slap. "You promised me we would always be together. Even after we were in high school and we stared liking other people. You promised."
"Arielle! That's the point. I can't like you anymore. You're taking it way too far. You are going out of your way just to mkae her look bad and I'm tired of it. Your'retelling her lies about me."
"How would you know?"
"She talks to me?"
There was a slight pause. I felt like they could hear my fast heartbeat. I pushed my long, brunette hair out of my face. I couldn't move. I heard footsteps walking closer.
"Well then maybe she needs to get out of the picture." Arielle grabbed a steak knife.
The familiar boy walked in after. "Arielle! This is what I'm talking about. You're going crazy."
"Shut up." She started walking toward the steps. I slowly crawled up and hid behind the banister.
He grabbed her arm and pulled her in. She fought him. "Don't stop me from doing this. It's the only way to settle things once and for all." She finally broke loose and started walking up her steps.
"Arielle!" I gasped and quickly crawled down the hall, suddenly scared for my life. I ran into her bathroom and locked the door. Tears fell down my face as I backed up into her tub and sat in there.
I saw her shadow from underneath the door coming closer. I heard her bedroom door get thrown open. "Where is she?!"
I closed my eyes and tried to calm my breathing. Suddenly she was lingering by the bathroom door. She jiggled the doorknob and got frustrated when it wouldn't open. She kicked it and kicked it until finally she made a hole in the door and she could unlock it.
The door swung open and I screamed, covering my face, waiting for her to kill me.
