The Apocalypse is Upon usA Poem by caitlinI originally wrote this for a contest on AllPoetryThey warned us, Told us one day this would happen, They begged us to prepare For the terror that was sure to come, But nobody seemed to listen, No one seemed to believe. I bet if those Who have fallen victim, To the disease that has spread in so few hours, Had the chance to go back And hear it all again, They would believe. But alas, they did not. But never mind them, They are dead now, Though the continue to roam the streets. What matters here is me. Somehow I have managed To survive this less than horrifying outbreak, This zombie apocalypse That I have spent years preparing for. My weapons hand upon the wall, Uzis and shotguns That no longer serve as decoration, But rather as my only friends. I can’t imagine what a zombie apocalypse Would be like Without a handy chainsaw For those periodic Close combat situations. Canned pork and beans aren’t exactly my first choice, But in a situation like this What else is there to eat Without taking an unnecessary risk? And say I were to take a short little shopping trip To a now run down grocery store, Take what I want and not pay for a thing, The food wouldn’t last, At least not long enough. I have my rules of course. I aim for the head And almost never miss. Then there’s the double tap rule, Just in case. Of course here in my cozy little house, There isn’t much need for such rules. I’m barricaded in, But I know how to get out, In case they figure out how to get in. I have my weapons Where I can reach them Whenever I need them. It’s only night one And already I know That so few remain. I suppose I could go out And search for survivors, But at a time like this What’s the point in taking an unnecessary risk? © 2011 caitlin |
