As if You Were Mine

As if You Were Mine

A Poem by caitlin

I never really had you,
You were never mine,
And now you’ve gone away
And miss you as if
You’d always been mine.
I suppose I could have had you,
If only I had asked you to be mine,
If only I had used verbal words
Rather than writing them
On that rose red sheet of paper
Sprayed with my amber perfume,
The one that slipped through your fingers
To be lost among the feet of the business-shoes.
I wonder if that rose red paper
Still floats along the sidewalk
Among those shoes,
The scent of the amber perfume
Drifting in the air.
Perhaps if that paper
Had not slipped through your fingers,
Perhaps if you had gotten the chance
To read the words I’d written,
Or heard the words I had to say
Then you would have been mine.
Perhaps if that had been,
Then I would not be stuck here alone
With nothing but the dew-lit spider webs
Dimly lit by the light of morning
To keep me company,
And perhaps I would not miss you
As if you had once been mine.
