You Thought You Were SafeA Poem by caitlinOriginally written for a contest on AllPoetry
You thought you were safe,
Thought the blanket and the hot chocolate Would protect you from the monsters That lurk in the night, But you were wrong, You were oh so wrong, And now Your worst fears Wait at the door Begging you to answer Their desperate knocks. Don’t you hear them? They moan and they cry, The plead for your help And they “knock, knock, knock” At the door. From somewhere in the cold and dark night You hear desperate screams, Screams of a murder That no man could commit, The screams of a victim Desperately searching for revenge. But you try to ignore, Pass it off Telling yourself It must only be the wind, That it only the movie The images flashing on the TV screen That are playing with your mind And making you paranoid. But I assure you, You’re wrong, You are oh so wrong. The moans and groans, The desperate pleas for help, And the screams of a murder Long since committed By an unimaginable beast, They are all real, And they are all waiting Outside your front door. You thought you were safe, But you were wrong. © 2011 caitlin |
