Our First Mistake

Our First Mistake

A Poem by caitlin

Our first mistake
Wasn’t falling in love,
It wasn’t holding each other
In desperate arms,
Or intertwining lonely fingers.
Our first mistake
Wasn’t flirting with each other
To make our feelings known,
It wasn’t the smiles we shared
Or the kisses we wish we could have shared.
No,
Our first mistake
Was staying virtually silent,
Only dropping little hints here and there,
Hints that we could only hope the other would notice,
And using silly little code words
That only the speaker could understand.
Our first mistake
Was holding hands as if we were just friends,
Instead of tightening our grip
So our intertwined fingers would truly mean something,
And instead letting each other go,
Taking completely separate paths.
Our first mistake
Was keeping our lips sealed,
As if they had been super glued together,
And never parting them,
Not even once,
To say, “I love you.”
