Kessli stood over Zieryn lying on the ground the flames from the building were sending large clouds of smoke in the morning air, the smell of burning flesh, and the echoes of people slowly burning to death reached her ears. "Who is this guy?" she muttered to herself. There was movement from her left, turning her head slightly she gasped when she Xaliban, stood up his skin had a molten look to it, which made sense considering he was just burned alive, "how are you still alive?!"

Xaliban eyes focused onto her standing above the man who had just scarred his entire body, "I cannot die from mere flames!" he growled, gripping his sword he started shuffling towards her.

"How is that possible?!" she took a step back her foot bumping into Zieryn.

"That's none of your concern!" he growled, swinging his sword left to right, "you won't live long enough to figure it out anyway!"

Kessli clenched her fist, "you show up here," she whispered closing her eyes and focusing her thoughts, "and destroy this town!"

"What was that!" he roared, "what does it matter to you little girl!"

"I am sworn to protect this town and Zieryn with my life!" she whispered back, the sound of his footsteps getting closer.

"Well that is what you going to do then!" he bellowed, he stopped in front of her, his blade hanging in the air above her, "you will die with that worthless whelp."

Kessli muttered a phrase in witakine, as she did a swirl of magical energy glowed around her hands, "last chance, walk away." She muttered looking up at him, her eyes glowing brightly.

"Who the hell do you think you are!" he growled.

His blade whistled through the air as he swung it down at her, "idiot!" she growled, the air around her instantly charged as she whipped her right hand straight up, pushing out a shield of air that stopped the blade in its tracks, at the same time, she planted the palm of her left hand on Xaliban's stomach and sent a burst a electricity that made him stumble backwards.

"What the hell!" he growled, rubbing his blistered gut.

He stood still for a moment rubbing his gut, that was all the time she needed to focus a charge in the palm of her hands, mimicking Zieryn's movement she slammed her hands together the charge amplifying greatly, as she pulled her hands apart the sky above darkened and great bolts of lighting leaped from the clouds, "you die now!"

Xaliban froze where he stood starring up at the sky in surprise, "how did you do that!" he growled, ripping his eyes away from the great storm above.

In the moment as he returned his gaze to her, she took a deep breath in return the lightning focused into a small ball of sparking light, "good bye," she whispered, as she breathed out sharply the ball of lightning blasted out in a massive bolt that caught him in the chest.

Xaliban was thrown by the force of the bolt straight back, slamming onto the ground with a loud thud, smoke curled off his chest as he laid there, after a few minutes his body twitched and stood up again, his face contorted in rage. "Didn't you hear me flames cannot harm me!" he bellowed, gripping his blade, he took a step back and sent it flying toward her. The sword howled in the wind as it sailed towards Kessli, she stepped back surprised at the speed of the blade, and in the blink of an eye the sword slammed into her chest and sent her flying backwards a good few feet. Through the smoke and dust Xaliban starred at the motionless body lying on the ground, as a few minutes went by Xaliban started grinning. There was a flash of movement to the left, as an arrow went flying by his head, "who the hell was that!" He growled turning around on the spot trying to find the shooter, running over to the motionless body of Kessli he picked up the giant iron sword sitting next to her, there was bit of blood running down the side of her head, "not that tough were you." He laughed hysterically, when another arrow struck the house nearest him, he spun around and barely noticed the flash of movement disappearing into the woods.

"What are you doing here Xaliban?" a voice cooed from an open widow above him, "I didn't think you had the brains to do anything for yourself." The voice laughed, there was the twang of a bow, and an arrow stuck him in the shoulder.

"Who's there?" Xaliban bellowed as he ripped the arrow from his shoulder blood dripping from his shoulder, "Show yourself you coward!"

"You call me a coward, when you destroy a town without warning." The voice laughed.

"Who are you?" He screamed spinning around looking for the person.

"Don't you recognize my voice?" the voice whispered into his ear, "I once advised the late king."

Xaliban froze where he stood, turning he starred into deep golden eyes, "Zanthriel?"

"Good boy," he replied.

Xaliban blinked in surprise, and fell back when he opened them he wasn't standing there anymore, "where are you?!" he roared jumping to his feet.

"I'm right here," Zanthriel replied tapping him on the shoulder, as Xaliban turned slowly Zanthriel simply turned to smoke before his eyes.

"How did you do that old man?" Xaliban growled sweeping his sword through the smoke.

"Trade secret," Zanthriel cooed, standing behind him again, drawing back his bow string, he coughed Xaliban nearly jumped out of skin, and when he turned around he jumped back when he saw the arrow pointing at him, "we both know how this ends, how about you grow some brains and leave now!"

Xaliban gritted his teeth, "fine old man, you win but mark my words this isn't over." He growled pointing at Zieryn, "you can't protect him forever." Turning he walked out of the town his sword resting on his shoulder as he left.

Zanthriel looked down at the man laying on the ground, "you need to be stronger." He muttered to himself, "or we are all doomed." Reaching down to his belt he undid a blade tied to his side, "take this blade and become strong." He looked at the glowing red sheath, it felt warm in his hand, it had some gold engraving running along the material. Deftly removing the sword from the sheath, he admired the sword as the blade met the air it erupted into flames, its hilt comprised of an ornate dragon head with two glinting rubies where the eyes were, and two sharp dragon talons made up the hilt of the blade, "may this blade serve you well my child."

-Two Hours later-

Kessli stirred her head splitting from where the blade had hit her and sent her flying, "damn b*****d, has one hell of a throwing arm." She rubbed her head; the blood had dried into her hair, "great now I got to wash." She scoffed folding her arms, glancing around she saw Zieryn lying on the ground still, but his eyes were open.

"What happened?" he asked turning his head to look at her.

"Thank Avva you're still alive!" she jumped up running to him, "you were amazing never seen someone use that kind of power!"

"At least someone was able to remember," he scoffed looking around, his eyes locked with a dead body lying near him, "Travis," he could feel the burning anger in him still but there was nothing for him to do, "why did it have to be this way," he asked turning to her, "my life was peaceful until you showed up."

Kessli looked into his eyes, she could see the pain in his eyes, but there were no tears or anything it was if he had lost part of his soul today, "I'm sorry," she said tears broke from her eyes as she through her arms around him, "I didn't know this would happen, I was forced to come find you," she cried, "not in my wildest dreams would I have wanted this to happen to you!"

Zieryn looked down at her, he could feel her sobbing into his chest all his feelings of hate and anger towards her instantly evaporating, "I'm sorry to," he said hugging her back.

Sniffling she looks up at him, "why are you sorry," she said a curious look on her face.

Smiling at her, "I don't know, I just didn't want to see you crying anymore over me." He said whipping a tear from her cheek. "You have such a cute face it shouldn't be stained with tears." He could feel a bulge near his thigh he could feel something big pressing into his leg, glancing down he could see the glint of something gold peaking out from underneath her legs.

Kessli starred at him, a blush running across her face, "thank you," she replied, she jumped out of her skin when he reached down between her legs, "what are you doing…." Her voice trailed off when she felt something run along the inside of her thigh, she shivered and without thinking slapped him across the face and jumped up and glared at him, "what the hell did you just do!"

Zieryn starred up at her, a sword in one hand and a dumbfounded look on the other, "um I was getting the sword you were sitting on," he said waving the sword at her.

"Why didn't you say something, instead of doing that?" She said a deep crimson blush taking over her face.

Zieryn looked at her for a moment, "oh," he muttered blinking, "I'm not really use to being around a lot of girls."

"That's not an excuse!" she yelled, she glared at him for awhile, blinking she pointed at the hilt of the door, "what's that note?"

Turning the sword around, he saw a piece of parchment attached to the hilt, "wonder who left this?" he muttered pulling the note from the side he opened it and read:

"My child you are gifted with great power, you are destined to do great things in the future but the strength you have now is not nearly enough to take on the evil of the world. So I make a request to wield the sword you are holding I ask of you to go and gather eight brilliant people that will help you in your journey. The girl with you is the first of the group she is sworn to help you in life or death. Remember my child I am always watching. From Flames Comes New Life."

"Zieryn we need to go now!" Kessli grabbed his shoulder pulling him up.

"What?" he looked around, the sudden smell of death lingering in the air, "what's that smell?"

"No time," she said pulling him down the road, "someone is putting an eternal sleep spell on this town!"

"But Travis!" he yelled reaching out to the body lying on the ground, "I can't just leave him there!"

"There's no time!" she said pulling him even harder.

-Outskirts of Teramaine-

"Kessli?" Zieryn looked at her panting on the ground.

"What?" she asked.

"We need to get to Obenshire."

"Why?"

"Because I have a feeling we're going to find someone who needs our help."

"What ever you say."

"Better get some rest, It's gonna be one long walk."

© 2012 xfallen5oldierxAuthor's Note
