A Living Hell

Fiction. Based off a friend of mine who was depressed and self-harmed and was suicidal. Unlike the protagonist in the poem, my friend is still alive.

You never had the chance to be a teen
You never had the chance to have a sweet 16
You never had the chance to know someone just like me
You never had the chance to
The chance to dream

Everyday you wake up
Not knowing how good life can be
Not seeing every possibility
While your fathers a drunk and your mothers an addict
you are left to take care of yourself
They don’t treat you right
They never did
You wish you were anywhere but there

You never had the chance to be a teen
You never had the chance to have a sweet 16
You never had the chance to know someone just like me

You get home from school
They start screaming
It’s the same every night
Two against one, they win
Bruises cover your skin
Try to hide it by wearing long clothes
Kids at school tease and call you emo

One day
You find a knife
you find a blade
You find a gun
You hide them in your room where no one can find them
After your parents treat you worse one day
You run to your haven
For you, they have nothing nice to say
To them, you are nothing
Then your parents feel guilty
And want to apologise
But it’s too late now, you’re dead
Now they see the causes of their actions
All because you’re dead
