The Morning of My Doom

The Morning of My Doom

"

Elizabeth Carter is meeting her soon-to-be step-dad this morning, but they start off on the wrong foot. Experimental. Might continue.

"

Hazy-eyed and half asleep, I stumbled out of my bed, clumsily walked to my bathroom, and turned the light on. The lights flickered as I drearily looked at myself in the mirror and began to brush my teeth. Afterwards, I brushed my sable-colored hair and shuffled to my bed and almost drifted back to sleep. But my mother yelled at me to hurry up. I shuddered at the thought.

I hated the thought of meeting what’s-his-face. Well, actually, his name was Alan, but why should I care? This… thing was the bane of my existence and quite honestly I hate him. Sure, I hadn’t met him yet, but I already hated him because he was to be my step-dad. I much rather preferred only having my mother around (when she was around, that is) and my little sister when she wasn’t playing with the next-door neighbor, Juliet.

Oh. Right. Hi, I’m Elizabeth Carter. People call me Liza. My mother calls me Beth and my sister calls me Liz. This man, however, will call me Elizabeth, no exceptions. I stared the russet-haired man in the face, his brown eyes meeting my hazel eyes. I knew I was frowning and my mother was whispering fiercely into my ear.

“Talk to him, sweetie,” she said nervously as Alan glared at me and I glared right back.

I didn’t reply and I walked right past him into the kitchen.

I slammed my hand to the wall and felt the rattle go through the house as my mother rushed in and looked at me, a frown on her face.

“Beth!” she said, her voice cracked and for once I saw just how tired she really was. “Will you please cut that out? Alan… Alan might… um…”

She was searching for the right words. She acted like I didn’t already know, but I did and I said bitterly, “I’m sorry Mom, but I can’t stand him!”

Her eyes softened. “I know, sweetie.”

I frowned at her ‘understanding.’ Quite honestly, she didn’t know anything; I totally hated this man; I’d have him dead if I could. Okay. I might not have known him at all until today, but he’s really getting on my nerves.

“I’ll stand him for today.” My mom looked relieved, “But I won’t accept him.”

She had lost the war.
