I took a look beyond the cuts 

Beyond the bruises 

Beyond the burns 

Beyond the hurt 

Beyond the tears 

I took a look beyond the pain

Physical

Emotional 

Mental 

I want you

I need you 

But why must you hurt me

Why must you cause me this pain

Baby look, look down at those hands 

That once said they'd love me 

That once said they'd protect me

They are now the ones that leave me sitting here in my tears

Nicely crafted message of ambivalence between a remembered love scenario & an abusive reality. I can feel the way the narrator still longs for this guy even tho he's proved himself to be a jerk. I can feel the futility of trying to reason with someone who clearly has a problem with abusing his power. Even tho I've seen & heard women make this plea so many times, I can tell ya, this guy ain't gonna change. It's almost painful to watch. You've captured that futility so gently & with a wisp of wasted hopefulness.
