Warmth on a Cold Day

Warmth on a Cold Day

A Poem by Andrea N
"

Poem I made in high school for a Creative Writing class

"

A soft blanket of snow, sparkling white
Lies on the ground of our soundless small town.
Children make snowmen and angels in daylight
And stay in for warmth when the sun goes down.

Christmas is coming, bright lights light the streets
Presents are wrapped with ribbons and bows
Tables are loaded with candies and treats
And the tree gives off a radiant glow.

Families come together at this time of the year
Give presents, get presents and have a feast.
The day is filled with love, warmth and cheer
It's a day to be joyful, a day to have peace

Stockings are pinned over the fireplace,
A boy opens a gift with a smile on his face.

The first stanza is decent. The image of a blanket of snow isn't exactly original but it is possibly the only beautiful thing in this poem. These are all nice thoughts and the piece has a good theme, but the syntax and the rhyming are all very ordinary. I'm not saying you should change the poem, considering you wrote it in high school. But my advice for future poems is this: Write *with* emotion, not *about* emotion. If you're going to write about something as wonderful as Christmas, make the readers feel it with you.
