Chapter OneA Chapter by SamanthaThe adventure begins Chapter One I sat up and tugged on the blinds. The full moon shone in my bright green eyes that were beginning to turn golden from hunger. I stood up and walked over to my old dresser. Pulling open the drawer, I took out an old pair of ripped jeans and a random t shirt. Hey, I may be a vampress, but I’m a civilized vampress. I do laundry and chores, just like anyone else. I walked over to a small table and picked up my hairbrush, brushing my dark brown hair that reached my shoulders. I then put it up in the same everyday ponytail. My normal bright green eyes and dark brown hair were an odd mix, but I loved it all the same. I sighed and walked over to my front door, carefully picking my way through the planks of wood nailed to the door frame. I shivered and straightened up, walking down the staircase to the street. Two little boys, looking about eight, stood on the sidewalk in front of my house. They looked at me and one turned to whisper to the other. “That’s the witch I was telling you about. If you go into her house, she’ll cut out your tongue and pop out your eyeballs so she can eat them for breakfast.” The other boy gave his friend a frightened look as I approached them. Trying not to roll my eyes at their comment, I stopped in front of them and looked down at them, smiling. “See, that’s where you have it wrong… I’m a vampress, not a witch… And vamps are much worse than witches. Vamps will pierce your neck with two razor sharp fangs and drain you of your blood while your still alive, paralyzed.” I paused for a moment, watching their faces grow into horrified looks. “So run along, and don't you ever call me a witch again unless you want to be my dinner” The two little boys screamed and ran. I laughed, watching them run into town. I loved over exaggerating and scaring the little kids. I only got those who deserved it though. Most of the kids that I got back were boys. I heard footsteps behind me and turned around only to see a little girl. She had long black hair and burgundy dress on. I leaned down so I was her height and looked at her. She smiled. “Are you really a vampire?” I smiled back at her and shrugged before changing the subject. “What are you doing this far from town? Shouldn’t you be home with your parents?” The little girl shook her head. “I live with my grandma… She told me to leave cause grandpa was yelling at her again” I bit my bottom lip and stood up. “Hmmm… Well, be carful, and try to stay close to home. There are lots of bad people out at this time of night” The little girl smiled before turning and began to walk away. She quickly spun back around and looked at me. “What's your name?” I smiled again. “Roxanne. What's yours?” “Luna” “Okay, Luna. I have to go, and you should head back to be close to your house” She nodded again, and turned to head in the opposite direction of town. I turned to walk into town. After about a half hour or so of walking, I noticed a lump in a corner. I slowed my pace down as I saw an old man asleep, lying on a cardboard box. I kicked him and he grumbled, throwing a beer can at my feet. I sighed and leaned down, picking the old man up by the hood of his torn up sweater. I dragged him into the corner of a nearby alley, crouching down to look him in the face. He looked in his late seventy’s. I sighed again and lifted up his chin. He looked at me and raised one grey eyebrow. “How much?” “Excuse me?” “How much? I only got a fifty… Will that work?” “You think I’m a prostitute?” The beat up looking man nodded and I leaned forward so I could whisper. “Do you have a house or family?” The drunken guy shook his head and I nodded. I held out my hand and he gave me a fifty dollar bill he pulled out of his pocket. I gave him a quick kiss on the cheek, and then slid my lips down to his neck. I sank my fangs into him and he let out a small whimper. He soon fell quiet and his body lay still as I drank the last of his blood. I sat back up and wrapped him in his sweater a bit better. “Sorry old man…” I wiped the blood off of my lips and began to walk back towards my house. I was lucky to get an early meal tonight. I stepped back onto the dimly lit street and walked slowly down the sidewalk. I suddenly felt as if I was being watched. Like there was a dark presence; but all at the same time a warm comfort. It was such an odd feeling. I quickly shook it off and looked around. I didn’t see anyone, so I continued to walk. About fifty feet away from the spot where I had the odd feeling, there was a ruffle in the bushes. I screamed as a dark figure popped up out of the bushes. I stopped screaming and began to laugh. I walked up and gave the man a hug. “Hey dad! What are you doing here?” “I came to say hi to you! I haven’t seen you in ages!” “I’m sorry! I really like it here. You should move so your closer!” “Oh no, I couldn’t. I love home too much and your mother’s buried there. I couldn’t leave her” I nodded and stepped back from our long hug. I looked up at my father. His black hair blended into the night sky. He looked down at me and his blue eyes shown brightly. He was so different from my mom, and I was so different from them. My mother had had blonde hair and brown eyes. My dad put his hand on my shoulder. “So… How does your house look?” “Normal…. I was thinking about buying something for it tonight, but I have to hurry before all the places close” My dad gave me a questioning glance as if to ask ‘how do you have money?’ Since vampires are nocturnal, we didn’t normally get jobs. Yes some got night shifts, but I didn’t need money. I lived in an abandoned house by candle light. I got what I needed without people noticing. Getting back to the moment in time, I nodded at my father. “Tonight’s meal thought I was a prostitute. He gave me the fifty and I returned the favor by taking the poor old mans life” My dad nodded again and we walked down the street. Turning a corner, we walked up the stairs of an old building and walked in the door. A rush of heat and bright light hit me. Thankfully only sun hurt us. We walked down a path of beds and couches for a while until I stopped at a big box full of assorted carpets. I picked up a decent sized rug that was forty eight dollars and walked towards the front of the building. My dad looked at the rug. “Red and black? Original Vampire colors!” I nodded as a smirk appeared across my face. “You should see my bedroom now! It actually matches! Everything is red, black, and white. It looks great.” “It sounds good. You didn’t make a living room on the bottom floor did you?” I shook my head. “I know the rules. No, all my living stuff is upstairs where no one can tell I live there. I have a living room with a TV and stereo, a nice couch, and a rug. Oh, and of course I have my bedroom. Then I have my bathroom and my laundry room. It’s pretty nice. Each room has a different color theme. My room is red, white, and black and still needs a carpet, so I’m fixing that today. My living room is just plain black and white, my bathroom is orange and yellow, and my laundry room is a dark purple and blue.” My dad nodded while smiling. He helped me lift up the carpet onto the table where a small lady scanned it and I gave her the money. She took the money and I told her to keep the change as my father and I picked up the rug and walked out the door. Within the next hour of random talking, we got to my house and I could have sworn I had that weird feeling again. I ignored it and pushed my way through the old boarded up door and signaled for my father to follow. He followed me up the staircase and we entered my bedroom. We dropped the rug and I kicked it so it unrolled. It fell into place and I lifted up my bed so it could fit under it. I took a step back and looked at my now finished room. I smiled and my dad gave me another hug. “I'm happy you like it here” I smiled and looked up at him again. He was looking around my room admiringly. Suddenly, his happy mood faded and he looked at me. “Can we go to your living room? There's something important I need to talk to you about” I nodded and led the way to my black and white living room. I sat down on my couch as my father sat next to me. His bright blue eyes darkened as he looked down at me with concern. “I know you like it here and just got settled in, but I really think you should come home” My face fell and I shook my head. “Dad, we’ve been through this before. I'm fine” “No, your not. There have been a sudden increase in vampire hunters lately, and their presence is even stronger here. It’s not safe. And what if you accidentally don't drain someone’s blood completely?” “They’d tell someone” I said the words for the hundredth time in my life. It was always a caution we had to take. If for any reason the person said anything, vampire hunters would automatically be alerted and I would be caught. My dad looked at me and continued. “Exactly. Can’t you just come back with me? There’s a nice vampire boy down the street who would like to meet you” I rolled my eyes. Another thing my dad was worried about. He wanted me to fall in love with some vampire and have little vampire babies; he didn't want me to go through some tragic event like he had with my mother. He was worried I wouldn’t find love. I, however, could care less. I liked being on my own, and caring for myself. My dad thought I needed someone there to protect me. Vampires and vampress’ have different qualities. Both can run very fast if needed, but there were unique little things about each individual. My dad, for example. He had very good understanding of feelings. And along with that comes the usual male vampire power of amazing strength. I hadn’t discovered my power yet, and my dad was always worried about it. I looked up at him trying to swallow back my anger. He looked at me sadly. “I know, I know, I'm always treating you like a little girl. But you don't understand that you are my little girl and I'm worried for you” “You don't have to be! I can take care of myself, on my own” “No, you can’t, Roxy” “Yes, I can! And you don't seem to understand that! I haven't been seen, heard, or caught, in all the time I’ve lived! I don't need someone to watch me, I'm perfectly fine” My dad sighed. “Ok.” I looked at him, secretly throwing a party in my head that I had won the argument. He smiled at me. “You’re lucky you won this time” “Stay outta my head” I said with a smile. My dad stood up and looked around the living room. “You did a great job on the house. You have to keep an eye on the curious kids though.” I laughed, “Oh don't worry about them. I got that under control” My dad smiled. “Well, I'm sorry this was such a short visit, but I have to get home before sunrise” I nodded and gave him another hug. “It was nice to see you again, dad” “It was nice to see you again too. Be careful while I'm gone” “I always do” I smiled and stepped away from our hug. After walking him down the stairs, I watched as he left my house. I sighed and he walked off into the trees across the street. © 2010 SamanthaAuthor's Note
