Cheers, Mate

Cheers, Mate

A Poem by Tori
"

When a friendship feels like it's been lost.

"

Cheers, mate.
Pour yourself a drink
And let's revisit
The simpler times.
When I could hold up my glass
And say
"Here's to you and me.
Forever."
And you would grin
That cheshire-cat grin
And you would agree.
"Forever
And
Ever,"
You'd say,
And because of the honesty in your eyes
And the smile on your lips
And the way you held my hand...
I believed it.

We were the best of friends then.
We still are...
Just less "best" and more "apart".
Maybe it was the champagne
Or maybe it was envysuspicionloveandloss.

It was me and you forever.

Now...
I just wish we could find that state of
Togetherness

Where
did
you
go

?

I love the style of this poem, the total free-form reflecting the speech, the slowing down at the end. The second stanza speaks volumes, shows a whole life without boring you by detailing it. Very true, very real.
