humanity.

humanity.

A Poem by Alexa

a little boy softy traces designs in the dirt
meaningless imprints of longing
reflected from his quietly sorrowful heart
and watches as the bitter wind blows them away.

amidst lace and lipstick and dreams
a radiant bride feels the long-practiced vows escape from her lips
and smiles in perfect ecstasy
as she stares into the soul of her new husband
her fingers, fitted with the slender weight of her ring
tremble with energy
and they begin their new life.

a perfectly timed laugh escapes from the lips
of a gorgeous woman
who steps into a club
breathes in the longing glances and moves her hips
to the deafening music
and as her silky hair drifts about her smoldering eyes
she pauses for a moment
and wonders..why?
before losing herself to the whirlwind of soundless fury.

a man stands in awe
watching the ascending sun
its rays melting into vibrant colors
stretched across the sky
its simple glory perfectly reflecting
his laughing, dancing, jubilant soul

a fragile old man
stares quietly at the patterns in the wallpaper
as a spider drifts along a tenuous cobweb
and the television soundlessly blares its mundane cry
and he drifts deeper into his longing memories
of life.

a girl and her dog bound across resplendent meadows
pausing for a while to sing, or play, or sit and think
content in youth and unconcerned
relishing the wind at her back and the sun at her face,
she smiles and at this second
knows the world.

a teenage mother silently screams her fears
to the dawning day
crying until her love and her hate and her desires
dissolve into an all-consuming fury
and she feels as if the very universe
is not enough to hold her heart in its hands
dreams and cries and moans with ardent desire
until she hears the piercing cry of her precious child
and quietly hardens her heart.

all the passion and fury of the universe
scattered into a million souls
and slowly smoldering with life..
this is humanity.
