And So It BeganA Chapter by xJTK
Lying here on a plain of glistening, pure snow, my mind races around in circles. I feel a searing pain in the back of my head. The thing that caused it was horrible, evil. I was trekking through this land. Alone. Only a tarnished blade at my side. The sun was setting, rays of orange, red, pink and yellow, flowing about the snow. I knew there were beings of evil around this land. I didn’t think I would encounter them. I was wrong. A creature, no, an evil, had found me. It paced towards me slowly. Then, without warning, it was in front of me. It raised its paw --- large, menacing --- and it struck across my body. The force knocked everything out of me, and now I was lying here. I glanced down at my abdomen, blood streaked across it. A large wound, three slices from a set of claws. It looked infected. I tried to sit up, but my head was spinning. I fell back down, my head clunking on the ground. Not a good idea. I reached my gloved hand in a leather satchel at my side. I took out a frayed cloth. I sat up again, trying to stay up, trying to resist the pain. I rapped the cloth around my abdomen as tight as possible. Maybe the bleeding would stop. Once the pain from the claw marks was gone, I felt the bitter chill of the wind. If I didn’t get out of here, I would die of freezing. I stood up, wobbling, my head my brain pounding into my skull. I started taking small steps forward, trying to stay on my feet. I wasn’t sure which direction I was going once I started walking. I just walked, my feet continuously sinking into the snow. I kept trekking forward until, to my utter joy, I saw a group of huts, a caravan, and, the most glorious thing there, a fire. I tried running, wanting to get there as fast as I could. This, as well, was a dumb idea. I tripped forward in the snow, my head pounding against the ground again. This was the end of it. My body, my mind, couldn’t take it anymore. My eyes closed, the world around me drifted away. I slipped into unconsciousness. The world turned dark. © 2009 xJTK |
