Apprentice -- Chapter 4

Apprentice -- Chapter 4

A Story by Sarah

I stare blankly at her awhile, not sure if I should be the first to speak. I start to feel her spell wash over me and I suddenly feel my legs go weak. Gripping my bed for support so I don’t fall flat on my face, I hear her talk in a voice that is almost a whisper.

“So answers are what you want?” How did she know that? I have not talked to anyone about this nor have I even spoken to myself about it. Its only ever been in my head. Oh great, now she is some freaky mind reader.

I simply nod and I see some more of a disturbance wash over her. I did not even say anything and it looks like I said something wrong. It seems like its going to be a long night.

She speaks slightly louder. “Well I cannot give any answers without a question being asked.” That sweet sweet voice…I find that my eyes have wondered to her lips again. I am not sure what is drawing me to them so much or why I want them so badly. But if she didn’t make me so nervous, I would have her against my wall and our tongues meeting for the first time. I see her smirk. S**t. Mind reader, I forgot.

She giggles almost evilly and sits on the edge of my bed and pats the spot beside me. I make my way beside her with my wobbly legs and take a seat. She simply looks at me, waiting.

Where do I start? I guess I could start by that day at Demi’s house when she played that mind trick on her. Or maybe if she was the presence I was always feeling. Or even why I always seem to get the vibe she isn’t human.

I find my voice and let out another croak. “That day at Demi’s house…Was it real?”

She looks away with a thoughtful look, almost as if she is trying to make up an excuse or a lie to tell instead of the answer I desperately need to know. She nods once and doesn’t meet my gaze again.

“Why? What are you trying to do to me with all these mind tricks?”

I can see it in her she doesn’t want me to know the truth, like its too much for me to handle. Now I am the one waiting. Very impatiently, I must add.

“It was like the beginning of a good essay…that was my attention grabber.” What the hell is she getting at here? I am lost already. “The day you didn’t show me around the school. I knew you could not forget about me cause I just would not have that.”

Forget about her? Forget about that face? Yeah, keep dreaming princess.

And of course, another smirk. I really need to learn how to filter these thoughts of mine.

I nod. I have no filter when it comes to speaking. “There is something about you…something strange.” She looks at me with a glare that instantly makes my skin crawl. The red in her eyes starts to inflame.

“No no no, not like that. I just mean, youre different from any girl I have ever met. You’re mysterious…you have an unforgettable face…I spell binding charm…a sexy presence about you.” The inferno that was once her eyes are turning back into the deep green I remember from that first day. Note to self, eyes change with mood.

“I simply cannot help that, Patrick.” She didn’t say that in a superficial way, but almost as if she doesn’t like it and she honestly cannot help who she is. I love the mystery of her. It makes me want to know every one of her secrets, her every thought.

She lets her head lean forward, watching her fingers play with each other.  I reach out to curl her ebony colored hair behind her ear when my finger gazes across her skin. I almost want to yell out in pain cause of the heat. Her skin has to be at least 200 degrees. From my one semester of Anatomy class, I know for a fact that any human would die if they came even remotely close to that temperature.

She jumps at the feel of my skin on hers and stares me blank in the eyes. She looks scared and almost flattered. I cannot find it anywhere in me to speak so I just stare back. My hand still by her ear, I let it fall to her side of her neck. I try my very hardest not to scream out in utter pain, but then I realize it is one of the good kinds of pain. Like sitting too close to a fire place when its lit; it hurts your skin but it makes you feel safe and warm. Our eyes never breaking contact, I pull her closer to me. Against her own judgment, she doesn’t argue. She is now only inches from my face and I feel my cheeks start filling with blood. Goddamn blushing. The intensity between us is almost too much to handle. So I pull her in until the gap is filled and your lips meet. Her lips are as sweet as her voice and as warm as her skin. Without warning, my eyes roll back and close as she opens her lips opening slightly wider, deepening the kiss. It feels as though I am leaving all reality.

All too early, she breaks away from the kiss and a softer and more beautiful smile crosses her face. Well someone enjoyed that…

“I should get going.” And without a word, she is gone. I let my finger linger on my lips for a few seconds, remembering the bliss of her lovely and sweet kiss. She really knows how to leave someone wanting more because there was nothing stopping me from running after her and getting a thousand more of those.

I wake up the next morning, relieved its Saturday. I have slept in a few hours more than usual so I guess it’s time to pry myself out of bed. Going to turn on my lamp, I feel a piece of paper underneath my hand. Strange. I unfold it and read it;

Dearest Patrick,

Last night was magical. Please meet me at the old church down on Lostview St. I have a surprise for you. I hope you won’t regret it.

-Skyler.

A surprise huh? Well I have already wasted time. I jump up and to the shower I go.
