March

March

A Poem by Aries
"

<> A poem written after a particularly emotional day for me, both stressful and fun, mingled together in an odd mixture of nostalgia. It has a bitter aftertaste.

"

Three hundred and sixty five days ago, I never would have thought it'd be this way

...

I close my eyes, the video's once-vibrant colour seeping to gray
knowing that these happy days of innocence
have been taken away

Sepia-toned sorrow forms bewilderingly
with friendship's decay
to the perpetual march
Of the enemy

...

An enemy that I can see advancing
at an uneven pace
seemingly chaotic
to cut to the chase

So patient and indifferent
to the destruction it has wrought,
making the friendships I've endured
all for naught

I scream at the false-blue sky to cut the reel,
cut my eyes loose,
please, oh God
just don't let me feel

I close the window, on the verge of tears
The sounds of our laughter
still haunting my ears

Author's Note

Aries
<> Today was Tomahawk Day, our school's field/spirit day.. Last year was a very good time for my friends and I, and in a year it seems everything has changed, people have changed. I've changed. This poem is about the enemy that marches by us, instead of through us. It kills and steals with patience.

Nothing but the passage of time has true permanence. Its place in the world is to facilitate the creation and destruction of all.

I appreciated how you employed a typical rhyming structure, but you didn't try too hard to conform to that formula where it would have cramped the effectiveness of the piece. This tells a story that many can relate to on some level, whether or not they've realized it yet.
