Have you ever stopped to think
about the sand underfoot on a busy beach?

 unwanted particulates in stagnation
that lay only to be walked upon 
that rise only when grasped
that fall forgotten again
 are swept out by sea
 or flushed by rain


a handful of silt 
is at best unremarkable
but when lightning calls down 
and gives it no choice but to rise
even the coarsest and meanest sand
the most useless and forgettable granules
the grains that were once wholesome but are no more
all realize

 what they made this journey for
