Boundaries

<> Life's challenges are what makes it living.

if you sit in an empty nest

and think about how much you've changed

from simpler times that needed little rest

to privilege that gave birth to freedom 

obtained by knowledge that now you test

it may be found that solitude

[ once  so  eagerly  craved ]

is no longer a fleeting beast sought

hunted for so fervently and idolized 

and seldom ever caught

but more now of a docile steed broken-in

 who, tamed by a now-necessary discipline

carries the weight of that bittersweet told-you-so

cantering along silently with your chagrin

as you lead it where you wish to go

You leave the reader with indirect question in the lines of this piece...as a reader I find the first line:

if you sit in an empty nest
and think about how much you've changed

and then into the last line:

cantering along silently with your chagrin
as you lead it where you wish to go

gives you much to ponder and yet its up to you...

Thank you for commenting - that's pretty much what finding self is, thinking for oneself and bearing the decisionmaking. Life offers lots of opportunities for thinking, and it's constantly testing us with questions that it will never give the answer to.
