On Being an Object of Affection

On Being an Object of Affection

A Poem by Hannah Ellsworth

Sly devil.

I wonder if she even knew

she was flirting with me.

I hope she finds

what she's looking for,

even though it would be strange,

not to be her favourite

anymore.

I thank higher powers

that they didn't know

what they were doing

when they tried

to clip her wings.

I always knew

one day she would fly

beyond their reach

and their cages.

Oh, I like that, Hannah. 'even though it would be strange not to be her favourite anymore' - a real celebration of the woman, who sounds scary, passionate and amazing all at the same time.
