Ring Around the Rosie...
Everything was fine. My family was just working on our fiefs, providing for the king and the ones who protect us. My brother and I running through the forest; dancing in the damp fields; it was all calm. That is until death ca,e upon us. As a young peasant girl living in the thirteen hundreds, life wasn't easy. You would work on a small patch of land known as your fief. It wasn't just for an hour or so and you were done. I'm talking about at least nine hours a day. Our family had barely enough to eat since we gave most of our food and products to the vessels (the people who protect us in this manor), the King, and the king's nobles. It actually isn't all that bad. We get protected from the invasions at least. Speaking of invasions, that's the reason I left Rome. Thus, starts my near death experience. My first one at that. I was a few years younger at the time. My brother Nathaniel who was five years my senior, (I was at the age of nine al the time) was helping my father outside with chopping wood to sell and for our own necessities. My mother, was braiding my hair back. As she did, I looked outside to where Nathaniel stand. His chestnut hair and tainted clothes were matted to his baby tanned skin with the sun glistening the beads of sweat running down his face. I admire my brother. He was strong; Intelligent. He teaches me all the things I need to know. Like how the world is a dangerous place; or how to speak and read Latin. I then looked at the rag doll mother made for me which lay in my hands. The clothes were ragged similar to the ones my brother and I wore. The doll is supposed to resemble me I believe. Grey pants that had dirt and dust with a pale shirt hat had spots and holes around it. I brushed my fingers against the stitches the formed the crooked smile. Just looking at it calms me. Others say it has a creepy appearance whenever they saw it. It was all peaceful after my hair was done. Father and Nathaniel had come inside to cool off and rest. All that was heard was the rustling of the leaves as the wind passed by. That didn't last long as a large boom echoed throughout the house. It came from the other side where the kitchen was located. "Mother is in there!!!" I thought. Nathaniel came rushing in with father by his side. "Adeline, are you alright?" My father asked. I replied with a shaky nod. "Where is mother?" Nathaniel asked worried. "She's in the kitchen fixing supper." We all headed towards the kitchen where everything was destroyed. The first thing I noticed was a mass of giant flames and you mother's lifeless body next to them. "Everyone out now!!" My father commanded. Outside was much worse. It was chaos with houses destroyed and people being taken away. Dead bodies littered the ground with groceries from shopping stands. Our father had told us to hide. We complied. He told us he would meet up with us in the forest. I choked on my fear in hopes he would meet us again. When everything see,Ed to cease a bit, we ran. We ran as fast as we could into the forests. I managed to get cuts, bruises and scars here and there, that didn't matter to me. All that mattered was that we got to safety and dad will come find us. My legs screamed to give in after what felt like hours. Nathaniel sat and rested alongside a tree. I did the same. Slowly drifting off, I thought about if father will find us and if we would ever reach safety. This was stage one of the End of the World... © 2017 Writing.the.StringsReviews
