I know Who I Am

I know Who I Am

A Poem by Amanda Worthington

Maybe I’m not pretty

Maybe I’m not tall

Maybe I don’t wear make up

mini skirts,

dresses,

or tight shirts.

I’m smart

and intelligent

and prideful

and confident.

I am more

than you say I am.

I am more

than my body.

I have always been told

how to look pretty

how to be skinny

how to dress.

Magazines will tell us

bedroom “tips”

what foods to eat

what styles are “in”

what type of body

we should have.

I know who I am,

I am not those headlines.

I am perfect.

I am beautiful.
I know who I am.

Author's Note

It saddens me to see how much the female body is idolized today, how it is seen as more of an object instead of an actual human. I want to make it known that the standards of society don't have to be your standards for yourself. As always, comments and constructive criticism is always appreciated :)

You did a great job writing this. The female body has been idolized by men far longer than we even know. When Hugh Hefner created playboy magazine, it actually helped woman to become objects of desire. Sex sold and the profits have never been better today which is a shame. All woman should be seen for who they are, not what their body looks like.

Such a relatable poem! Sometimes people don't understand that it's what's on the inside that counts, and that beauty isn't everything. I truly loved this beautiful poem, it was so inspiring!

You're welcome! :D
Great job at expressing your feelings through this piece! I see where you're coming from. Soceity wants us to be one way, but inside we want to be yourself. Sometimes it gets hard to be yourself, but just know God created you, and your beautiful! Wonderful piece and keep writing!

Your very welcome!
The message of this poem is something I wish more people would realize and live by. People are always judged on their physical appearances and if you're not skinny enough or stylish enough then people don't like you. It's sickening. Great job with the poem!

Most young woman can't read between the lines. Its all about money and sex sells as they say. Better off to ignore it all and live the way they want.
