A Stanger's KindnessA Poem by Amanda Worthington
She waited with her dwindling hope.
Long after dinner had come and gone, long after the last customer had left, wondering if she had been too naive to see that her date would never show. The waiter came and went, bringing her dessert, asking if she needed a ride, and finally, kindly, asking her to leave. Through the rain she walked by herself, wondering what fault of her's it was to be in this situation. Glad she was she had no hood, so the tears could blend with the water on her cheeks. The grey clouds above, a mirror of her own emotions, an endless torrent of sadness. It startled her when she felt no pin pricks of cold. But all around her it continued on. The kindness of a stranger, had him holding the umbrella over her head and not his own. Soft crinkles and brown eyes smiled but were worried. "I couldn't help but notice you need this more than me." and he offered the umbrella to protect her from the rain. He took her hand and pressed the handle and a slip of paper into her palm. Seven numbers not quite smeared were written in scrawling print. He smiled and shrugged, "I think that I might like to get to know you better. Maybe, you want to get coffee now?" She couldn't help but nod, because never before had a stranger's kindness felt so powerful.
